Roland Edward Doerring, 89, of Elkader, formerly of Garnavillo, died Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the Elkader Care Center surrounded by the love of his three daughters.

Visitation and funeral services were Friday, June 10, at Norway Lutheran Church in St. Olaf, conducted by Rev. Marshall Hahn.

Burial with military rites was at Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery, rural Farmersburg.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona was in charge of arrangements.

Roland was born Sept. 9, 1932, on the rural Luana farm of his parents, Arno and Bernadine (Brandtman) Doerring. He was baptized Dec. 3, 1932, and confirmed April 14, 1946, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Roland attended the Luana Consolidated School through the eighth grade and then stayed at home helping his parents on the family farm. He was drafted into the Army in January, 1953 and honorably discharged January, 1955 having served during the Korean Conflict as a truck driver. 

On Oct. 30, 1955, Roland was united in marriage with Marlene Ella Kurth at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Three daughters were born to this union. After their marriage they started farming on a farm near National. They milked cows, raised pigs, chickens, sheep and later dairy steers. They held a farm sale in 1998, and rented out their farm land. Roland then drove the auction truck for Jeff Sweeney of Waukon for many years. 

Roland loved going to farm sales, chuck wagon races, playing cards, attending his grandchildren’s activities and tractor pulling. He managed the Clayton County Fair tractor pull for many years and was a member of the Fair Board. He was also a member of the Friends of the Sherman Swift Tower, the Amvets of Monona and the St. Olaf Legion. He was an active member of his church helping with Lenten suppers and meatball dinners. 

Roland is survived by his three daughters, Connie Ruhser of Elkader, Debra (Gregory) Budack of Lancaster, Wis. and Peggy (Joseph) Connor of Farmersburg; grandchildren, Maggie Ruhser (Luis Arce), Molly (Ryan) Dahm, Nathan (Katie) Budack, Hunter Budack (Kasey Kelly), Amanda (Phillip) Meyer and Kimberly (Tyler) Carlson; great­-grandchildren, Lucas Arce Ruhser, Maren Dahm, Jack and Jessa Meyer and JoElla, Boyd and Leo Carlson; one sister, Inez Moon, and one sister-in-law, Elaine Doerring, as well as many other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marlene, on Jan. 9, 2020; his parents; his in-laws, Eldon and Ella (Koopman) Kurth; his son-in-law, Loren Ruhser; two brothers, Oliver and James; two sisters, Maxine Morch and her husband, Leo and Eunice Dickman and her husband, Myrl Dean; and a brother-in-law, Dwayne Moon.
