One person died as a result of a house fire in McGregor on June 5.

According to fire chief Tom Sauer, McGregor Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1 responded to a residence at 818 Walton St., just after 6 a.m.

“When we left the fire station, we could see the smoke over the hill,” he recalled.

The structure contained multiple living units, said Sauer. Firefighters were on scene for two hours and able to contain the fire to one room near the back of a unit that was occupied by two people.

A press release from the Mar-Mac Police Department confirmed one occupant of that space was able to get out, but the other resident, unfortunately, was not able to escape and was found deceased.

“Due to the nature of the call, and out of respect for the mourning family, no additional information will be released,” the statement read.

Sauer said other building residents also escaped safely.

The structure suffered extensive smoke and water damage, according to the chief. A possible cause of the fire has not been released.

“The fire marshal came and investigated it, and he’ll determine the cause,” since there was a fatality, Sauer said. “We can’t give any statement on the cause until then.”

In addition to McGregor Hook and Ladder, the Mar-Mac Police Department and the Iowa State Fire Marshal, responding agencies included the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Clayton County Medical Examiner, Mar-Mac Ambulance, Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance, the Prairie du Chien and Garnavillo fire departments, American Red Cross, Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and the MFL MarMac School District.
