The Central golf team suffered a series of losses last week, as the boys dropped both matches and the girls lost one and won another by default.
On the boys side, the Warriors lost their May 2 match versus West Central 208-235. Jordan Helgerson was the top finisher for the Warriors shooting a 53 to place third. Brock Eglseder finished fifth with a 57, Keaton Klingman was seventh with a 62 and Marcus Evans came away with a 63.
The boys’ next match was at the Pleasant Valley Sports Club against North Fayette Valley and South Winneshiek, where they finished third with a score of 232. Winner NFV shot a team total 177 and South Winn a 193.
Klingman accounted for Central’s best score, shooting a 52 for 11th place. Helgerson finished the match 13th with a 57, while Eglseder was 15th with a 61. Evans shot a 62 to finish 17th.
The girls started their week on the links with a victory over West Central, who did not submit a team score. Sophia Keppler led the team with a 55 and Haley Frieden shot a 63.
The Warriors followed that with a heartbreaking 244-245 loss against North Fayette Valley, despite having two top-placing golfers. Makayla Erickson and Frieden tied with 55s. Alexis Fettkether shot a 62 for fourth place, and Madison Schmidt earned a 73 for eighth. Jillian Finley shot a 75, ending the match in 11th.
Both the boys and girls teams will compete in their respective conference meets this week—the boys at MFL MarMac on May 9 and the girls at South Winn on May 10.
The boys will follow that with sectionals on May 11, while the girls will be at regionals on May 13.
