A fire on Tuesday evening, April 26, destroyed Bootleggers River Tavern, a popular restaurant and bar located on the banks of the Turkey River in Millville.

The Guttenberg Fire Department responded to the call at 6:39 p.m. that reported there was smoke and a possible fire inside the business and second-story residence. All the people and pets were evacuated from the upstairs residence before the fire department arrived.

"An initial fire attack was started, but the structure was quickly fully involved with fire," said Fire Chief Joe Zittergruen. A large water shuttle system was set up and the fire was brought under control at approximately 10 p.m. The building was a total loss.

There were no patrons in the business at the time of the fire since it was closed on Tuesdays. All occupants of the building were able to get out safely. The fire chief said that the Red Cross was contacted to help the family.

The Guttenberg Fire Department was assisted by six area departments from Colesburg, New Vienna/Luxemburg, Holy Cross/North Buena Vista, Elkader, Garber, and Garnavillo. Also on the scene were the Guttenberg Ambulance, Clayton County Sheriff's Department, Iowa State Patrol, Guttenberg Police Department and Friedlein Excavating.

Fire Chief Zittergruen  said that after an initial investigation, the cause of the fire was undetermined and remains under investigation.

The local fire department returned on Wednesday morning to extinguish some hot spots that had flared up.
