The Central girls track and field team turned in an impressive third place finish at the Oelwein Huskies Girls Invitational last week, in their first outdoor meet of the season. The Warriors battled the cold weather and strong winds to finish with 113 points. Five athletes earned 10 or more, including Hannah Asche with 17.5, Delaney Scherf 12.5, Brandy Beatty 12, Jaydin Dettman 11 and Lexi Loan 10.

The Warriors’ strong performance was displayed in the 100-meter dash, where they had four top-10 finishers, including race winner Asche with a time of 14.04 seconds. Grace Kuehl crossed the line fifth in 14.66, followed by Tori Sylvester in sixth at 14.68 and Haley Mueller 10th.

Kuehl added a fifth place mark in the 200, while teammates Tessa Sylvester and Brooklyn Amsden finished 14th and 20th, respectively.

In the 400 meter dash, Scherf took first place in a personal record time of 1:04.58. Dettman secured third in the 800 meter run after running a season best time of 2:42.25.

Beatty and Taylor Moser added two top-10 finishes in the 100 meter hurdles, with Beatty running second and Moser seventh with a personal record time. Tessa Sylvester finished the race 14th and Caitlyn Druecker was 16th. Moser added another personal record time with her second place finish in the 400 hurdles, while Gracie Cummer ran seventh.

In the distance races, Warrior Eva Embretson finished the 1500 in seventh place in a season best time of 6:28.92, and Alexis Thiese crossed the line ninth. Coral Rork placed fourth in the 3000 meter run.

The field events were also a success for the Warriors, starting with Alyson Feickert’s fifth place finish in the discus. Other discus participants included Embretson, who was 14th, Staci Herman in 16th and Macie Winters in 17th.

Two Warriors tied for third in the high jump, as Brooke Tieden and Loan both hit heights of 4 feet, 2 inches.

Loan returned in the long jump, finishing fifth with a season best jump. Cummer was in seventh and Tieden, with a personal record jump, finished 12th. Erin Dittmer finished 15th.

The Warriors sent out four participants in the shot put, coming away with two top-10 finishers. Feickert threw a season best 28-00.50, and teammate Scherf finished close behind with a throw of 27-08.00. Herman was  18th and Winters 20th.

The Warriors dominated the relays, winning the 4x100, 4x400, and 800 sprint medley.

In the 4x100, Beatty, Tori Sylvester, Mueller and Asche finished in 54.20 seconds, a full second ahead of second place Oelwein.

The Warriors didn’t win the 4x200, but finished a strong third as Mueller, Kaitlyn Wiley, Loan and Tori Sylvester crossed in 1:59.70.

The team of Dettman, Scherf, Wiley and Asche won the 4x400 by almost six seconds over Jesup, running the race in 4:24.98, and in the 4x800, Moser, Kelly Curran, Aspen Rork and Thiese placed fourth with a season best time of 13:04.98.

The Warriors sent out Loan, Wiley, Cummer and Beatty in the 400 shuttle hurdle relay, where they finished third, just two seconds behind the race winners from Independence.

Then, it was another win in the 800 sprint medley relay, as Tori Sylvester, Kuehl, Asche and Dettman ran a 2:00.41, winning by almost two seconds.

The Warriors finished outside the top five in the 1600 distance medley relay, with the squad of Tessa Sylvester, Curran, Embretson and Rork taking sixth, and the team of Amsden, Druecker, Herman and Katelyn Scherf finishing seventh.

“It was great to get the Oelwein meet in even though the wind was strong. After missing our first three outdoor meets, everyone was anxious to be able to compete finally. The wind did hamper things, so performances suffered a bit, but everyone was in very good spirits and quite a few things went well. I thought we battled the wind on the home stretch with a lot of confidence and grit,” said coach Martha Bauder. “We’ve also been working a lot on sprint mechanics, and I saw a lot of the girls paying attention to running on their toes and maintaining an efficient arm swing. It was just good for everyone to get an outdoor meet in so we can have a starting point to build off.”

The Warriors returned to action April 18, at Maquoketa Valley. They’ll be at West Delaware on April 21.
