Charlene K. Boom, 79, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

She was born on Oct. 1, 1942, the daughter of Otis and Wilma (Wilcox) Waterman. She grew up in central Grant County, and attended Boscobel High School before eventually graduating from Fennimore High School. She then continued her education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where she achieved her master’s degree in education. Charlene married Rodney Boom on Feb. 19, 1966, at the Little Brown Church in Nashville, Tenn. She taught GED classes in Augsburg, Germany, before returning home. Charlene taught English and French at the Iowa-Grant and Boscobel School Districts. She then accepted a position in Prairie du Chien as the librarian, a position from which she retired from many years later.

Charlene was a horse person all her life. She spent 40 years breeding Quarter Horses and enjoying those horses throughout the United States. Some of the most loved rides and packing trips for Rodney and Charlene included destinations like Wyoming, South Dakota and Arizona. Anyone who has ever camped at the French Creek trailhead knows the impact that the Booms have had there. Charlene and Rodney also hosted a trail ride twice a year at the family farm. Charlene’s love of horses was coupled with her love of dalmatians, which could always be found with her on rides around the farm. She enjoyed plays, art, gardening, reading and music. Charlene loved to experience the arts in many ways. She liked traveling to see shows in Branson, Mo., with friends. She loved her family and was very active in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Charlene was enthusiastic and gregarious, always welcoming company and making those around her feel loved.

Charlene is survived by her husband of 56 years, Rodney; their two daughters, Crystal (Nick) Kovacs and Renee (Joel) Sommerfeldt; her brothers, Bill (Sheri), Bob (Jo), Jerry (Tammy), Randy (Kay), and Monte (Bonnie) Waterman, and sister, Cheryl Waterman; grandchildren, Daniel and Brett Kerscher and Logan and Reid Kovacs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church in Mt. Hope, Pastor Lance Wetter officiating with private interment at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Monday, April 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. and also at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church.
