Kayla J. Mezera, 64, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Boscobel, on Aug. 31, 1957, the daughter of Dennis and Dorothea (Sitts) Koenig. Her family moved to Prairie du Chien in 1961, where she graduated from Prairie du Chien High School with the class of 1975. She then completed her undergraduate studies in special education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1979, before going to teach the third grade at St. John’s Catholic School in Prairie du Chien. Kayla married Michael Mezera on Oct. 4, 1980, at St. John’s Catholic Church. She then taught at Prairie du Chien High School, working toward her master’s degree, which she achieved from St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn. in 1987. She loved bowling, landscaping, cooking, and baking. She also loved helping others and taking care of those in need. She enjoyed annual vacations with her close group of friends, and being outdoors, especially on the river. While growing up, it was said that she could slalom ski from Prairie du Chien to the sandbars south of Lynxville. Kayla was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family dearly.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Michael; their children, Craig (Kelly) Mezera, Kelsey (Jerry) Huber, and Nathan (Hannah) Mezera; her siblings, Dale (Missi) Koenig, Carmen (Wayne) Granzow, Carin Koenig, and Kristy (Randy) Gaunitz; her grandchildren, Addison and Brooklyn Mezera, Hartley, Hadley McKayla and Huxley Huber, and Miles Mezera; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 28, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating with private interment at a later date. Friends may call at the Garrity Funeral Home on Sunday, March 27, from 4 to 8 p.m., where there will be a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m., and also on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of departure for church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Special Olympics or Prairie Catholic Schools. Online condolences may be left at garrityfuneral home.com.
