The Prairie du Chien Blackhawk wrestling team is advancing seven individuals to the 2022 State Tournament to be held in Madison from Feb. 24-26.

Richland Center was the host of a WIAA Division 2 Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 19. This Sectional was represented by wrestlers from 25 teams from four Regionals. The goal this year was back to normal after last year’s modified tournament series. Any wrestler to place in the top three of his weight class would qualify for the individual State Tournament. PDC was represented by nine individuals, all of whom advanced from last Saturday’s Regional tournament.

At 113#, Mason Baumgartner opened his day against Rodriguez (Big Foot/Williams Bay) and would lose by fall. Rodriguez would get beat in the semifinals, eliminating Baumgartner from being able to wrestle on the consolation side of the bracket.

At 126#, Ryder Koenig would start his day against Staver (Evansville) in a rematch of last year’s Sectional final. This match would not disappoint the fans as it would go to sudden victory tied 1-1. Koenig would then get a big throw for a feet to back takedown and finish his opponent off with a pin. In the semifinals Koenig would matchup against Beckett (Portage), who is a former State Runnerup. The match would not go Koenig’s way, as he would lose by fall to the eventual champion. In the consolation semifinals, Koenig would get back to winning with a 16-5 major decision over Hennessey (Delavan-Darien). In the consolation finals, Koenig would toe the line with Breunig (Lodi). Koenig would rack up points, and eventually get a pin in the third period to punch his return ticket to the State Tournament. Koenig would lose in the wrestleback for true second to Mau (Sugar River) by major decision 13-5.

At 132#, Rhett Koenig would waste little time pinning Thomason (Whitewater) in the first period. In the semifinals Koenig would again get a fall, this time in the second period against Lohmar (Brodhad/Juda). In the finals, we would see a rematch of the Clash and Regional finals with Seffrood (Darlington/Blackhawk). In a close match, Koenig would win 6-5 to advance to State for the third consecutive year.

At 138#, Drew Hird opened the day with a 9-7 decision over Whitney (Mauston/Necedah). In the semifinals, Hird would lose 5-2 to eventual champion McIntyre (Brodhead/Juda). In the consolation semifinals, Hird would defeat Carreno (Big Foot/Williams Bay) 11-5. In the consolation finals, Hird would earn his first trip to the State Tournament with a 2-1 win over Teague (Turner). In the true second place match, Hird would win again, avenging a Regional loss, with a 9-7 win over Paulson (Belmont/Platteville).

At 145#, Luke Kramer would drop his opening match 5-4 to returning State Placewinner, Schuh (Monroe). In the consolation semifinals, Kramer would get back to winning, with a 8-1 decision over Clemens (Lodi). In the consolation finals, Kramer would get a quick first period fall over Dolata (Mauston/Necedah) to earn his third consecutive trip to the State Tournament. In the wrestleback for true second, Kramer would be defeated by Radtke (River Valley) by decision 8-4.

At 152#, Maddox Cejka would start off with a second period fall over Porras (Whitewater). In the semifinals, Cejka would lose by fall to Arnold (Portage). In the consolation semifinals, Cejka would score a 17-2 technical fall over Swenson (Sugar River). In the consolation finals, Cejka would face Goebel (Darlington/Blackhawk) in a rematch of the Clash and Regional finals. Cejka would get a 6-3 win to punch his return ticket to the State Tournament.

At 170#, Brogan Brewer would get a 9-5 decision over Burk (Turner) in the opening round. In the semifinals, Brewer would win 3-2 over Sweers (Mauston/Necedah) to earn his first trip to the State Tournament. In the finals, Brewer would be defeated by technical fall 21-5 by Heiser (Evansville), who is the returning State Runnerup.

At 182#, Ty Wagner would start off against Hanson (Delavan-Darien) who is a returning State Placewinner. Wagner would lose by fall. In the consolation semifinals, Wagner would lose by major decision 8-0 to Hoehn (Mauston/Necedah).

At 195#, Blake Thiry would get a quick first period fall over Groskopf (Lodi). In the semifinals, Thiry would score a 16-0 technical fall over Loshaw (Sugar River) to secure a place in the State Tournament. In the finals, Thiry would win again, this time with a 5-2 decision over Horne (Darlington/Blackhawk) 5-2 in a rematch of last week’s Regional final. In doing so, Thiry becomes the first freshman PDC wrestler to win a Sectional title.

For the day, PDC would finish in first place with 109 points, to edge second place Lodi with 106.5 points.
