MFL MarMac senior Cullen McShane last week signed a letter of intent to play college football at South Dakota State University.

According to MFL MarMac head football coach Dan Anderson, this makes McShane the first Division I football player in school history. He joins a short list of MFL MarMac Division I athletes overall, including wrestler Steve Crozier and basketball player Raef LaFrentz.

“That’s a pretty small list of Division I athletes, and we hope to have more,” Anderson said.

Playing college football has been a long-time dream for McShane.

“When I was little, I said I was going to do it. I’ve worked for it, and it’s awesome to feel I accomplished my goal,” he said. “Now, I want to set a new goal. I want to go to the NFL.”

After also considering the University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa, McShane said he fell in love with South Dakota State, a winning program in the Missouri Valley Conference.

“They’ve been in the playoffs since 2012. They’re a good team on the verge of winning a national championship, and I can’t wait to be part of it,” he shared.

South Dakota State also regularly turns out All-Americans, and the team has sent linebackers to the NFL.

That’s attractive to McShane, who will be an outside linebacker for the Jackrabbits. He expects to play at least four games his freshman season, if he doesn’t red shirt.

McShane said his time at MFL MarMac has prepared him well for the college level.

“On our football team, if you’re a linebacker, it always feels like you’re working harder than everyone else, and I enjoy it,” he stated. “The linebacker is the leader of your defense, and I think that’s going to fit me well.”

The all-state player has also learned how to win at MFL MarMac.

“We’ve turned this place around. We have a winning culture and have been in the quarterfinals the last three years, and I’ve been here for all of them,” he added. “I know what it’s like to be on the verge of doing something great.”

Most importantly, football has shaped McShane as a person. He credits the team’s coaches, especially Anderson.

“We’re better people off the field because of what we do in practice. It’s not just making us great football players,” McShane said.

McShane will leave for South Dakota State, where he plans to study business and criminal justice, in June.

“Then, I’m going to put my nose down and get after it,” he said.”
