A series of third and fourth place finishes at the Feb. 5 sectional tournament at Starmont means no Warrior wrestlers will make it to districts—and the wrestling season comes to a close.
Sean Wilwert went 2-1 at sectionals and placed third at 170 pounds. He started the meet with a pin in under three minutes, but fell in the semifinals, losing a close 10-8 decision. In the third place match, Wilwert defeated his opponent by an 11-2 majority decision.
Daniel Royer also finished in third place at 138 pounds. He won his first match by fall in less than three minutes, but then lost in the semifinals by fall before winning the third place match by fall in a bout that lasted almost five minutes.
The last wrestler to finish in third place was Nate Shirbroun at 182 pounds. He had a bye in the first round but then lost his semifinal match by pin before going on to take third place via fall.
Central also had a pair of fourth place finishes, starting with Nick Deitchler at 132 pounds. He had a first round bye, but then lost a close match in the semifinals by 11-8 decision. Deitchler dropped his final match by fall.
The final wrestler was 106-pounder Reese Berns. She won her first match by fall in 38 seconds, but then was pinned in her next two, putting her in fourth place.
“It was a frustrating day as everybody came up just short of extending our seasons. But that’s life and we need to grow with it and learn from the mistakes we made there,” said coach Joe Koehn. “We lose two seniors, Sean Wilwert and Brandy Beatty, and both will be dearly missed. But we have a lot of young talent and seasoned veterans returning next season and I’m excited to see what we have in store.”
