Rita A. Oswald, 89, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022, at Bluff Haven Assisted Living. 

She was born in Eastman, on March 27, 1932, the daughter of Joseph and Stephina (Martin) Morovits. She attended Seneca High School, where she graduated as the valedictorian of the class of 1950. She worked as an operator at the Boscobel Phone Company. Rita married Roger Oswald on Nov. 29, 1951, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman. She and Roger bought the farm in the Eastman area in 1959. Together, they farmed until retirement in 1979, when they moved to Prairie du Chien. They also truly enjoyed traveling the country together. Roger preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 2006. She then worked at Cabela’s in Prairie du Chien. She was an active member of the Eastman American Legion Auxiliary. She loved playing cards with her friends in card club for many years, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles. She loved baking chocolate chip cookies for her kids and many grandchildren. 

She is survived by her children, Marilyn (James) Hurda, Lucille Morrissey, Donna (Russ) Mayne, Janie (Rick) Starkey, and Roger Lee (Suzanne); her siblings, Cyril (Karen) and Joseph (Linda) Morovits and Cecelia Skrade; sisters-in-law, Debbie and Irene Morovits and Delores Oswald; brother-in-law, Robert (Doris) Oswald; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Paul (Judy), Aloysius (Gertrude), Eugene, and Dennis Morovits; sons-in-law, Mark Boxrucker and Michael Morrissey; and brothers-in-law, Oliver and Duane (Maxine) Oswald and Fred Skrade.

A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the Garrity Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bluff Haven or Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien.
