Douglas H. Dickman, 84, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, at Crossing Rivers Health. 

He was born in Cashton, on Nov. 19, 1937, the son of Cornelius and Mary (Steidel) Dickman. He graduated from Cashton High School before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served his country for two years. He married the love of his life, Veronica Rogowski, at St. Mary’s Ridge in Cashton, on Dec. 29, 1962. Together, they moved to the Prairie du Chien area, where they raised their family. He worked in maintenance at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, where he stayed for 25 years until retirement. Doug was a lifelong outdoorsman. He was proud to be able to teach his children, and then his grandchildren, all he knew about hunting and fishing. He was an avid sports fan and never missed a Packer, Badger, or Brewer game and especially loved following his grandchildren in all of their school activities. Doug’s personal interest was sports, any kind of sport, but he especially loved the Prairie du Chien Hawks. In 2018, his recognition as a fan and contributions as a coach to his beloved Hawks were recognized when he was proudly inducted in the Prairie du Chien Athletics Hall of Fame. In spite of years of health issues, Doug never complained, always had a smile on his face and a laugh to share with anyone he met. He was known for his quick wit and love of a great joke. Above everything else, Doug will be remembered for his kind heart. He was genuinely thoughtful and caring, full of love and not afraid to show it. He made sure everyone he met knew how important they were.

To Doug, his family was his world and they meant everything to him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Veronica; their children Daniel (Johanna), Lisa (Ron) Sedgwick, Doug (Janet), Lori (Charlie) Webb, Michael (Heidi), Steve (Jodi), and Lyn (Chad) LaCrosse; his siblings, Marlene (John) Storer and David (Marlene) Dickman; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, especially Jeff Williams. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Kenneth and Royce Dickman, Joanne Williams, and Sandy Schumacher. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating with burial at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Military Honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard immediately following mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Crossing Rivers Hospice. The Garrity Funeral Home, of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.
