Wins over South Winneshiek and West Central last week improved the MFL MarMac girls basketball team to 11-4 overall and a perfect 11-0 in the Upper Iowa Conference.

Already up 21-2 by the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs cruised past South Winn 52-25 in the Jan. 18 match-up. The Warriors never scored more than nine points in a quarter, and were held to just 23.7 percent shooting from the field, including 1-13 from behind the arc.

MFL MarMac took away South Winn’s second chance scoring opportunities with a 25-15 rebound advantage on the defensive end of the floor. The team also snagged 11 steals and recorded five blocks—four of which were by senior Riley Moreland.

Offensively, the Bulldogs also struggled from three-point range, hitting three of 15 attempts, but made 37 percent of shots from the field. They also got to the foul line 20 times to South Winn’s 12, and made 15 of those free throws.

In addition to her four blocks, Moreland led MFL MarMac in points, rebounds and steals, with 18, eight and five in the respective categories. Miranda Lang was next up with nine points, and also had three steals, two rebounds and an assist. Brooklynn Moon finished the night with six points, two assists and two rebounds, while Ava Kishman tallied four points, two steals and an assist. Lakota Morrissey’s stat line included three points, five rebounds and two assists.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start offensively in their Jan. 21 game against West Central, up just 12-10 after the first quarter. They ended the half on a 20-10 run, however, and out-scored the Blue Devils 37-20 in the final periods to claim a resounding 69-40 win.

MFL MarMac had a 39.1 field goal percentage Friday night and hit eight three pointers. The team’s weak spot was at the free throw line, where they sank just 11 of 23 shots.

Moreland proved unstoppable, going 11-19 from the field and 4-7 downtown for 33 points. She secured a double-double with 13 rebounds, and neared a triple-double with a team-high eight steals.

Hannah Bogdonovich scored six points off the bench for the Bulldogs—all from behind the arc—and grabbed two rebounds and two steals. Ashley Shaw added six points and an assist, and Moon had five points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Avery Lamborn picked up three points, three rebounds and one each in the assist and steal columns.

The Bulldogs will play three times this week: at Kee (5-8) on Jan. 25, at Postville (2-12) on Jan. 28, then against an unspecified opponent in a rescheduled game at Decorah High School on Jan. 29.
