The Central girls basketball team lost just its third game of the season last week, falling to North Fayette Valley 55-46.

The loss moved the Warriors to 11-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference.

There were no official stats available for the game, but coach Mark Wiley provided some via comment, in addition to his reaction to the game.

The teams were tied 38-38 heading into the fourth period, where the TigerHawks out-scored the Warriors 17-8.

“It came down to not making shots. We were 10-29 from the paint and this low percentage from the field was a major difference in the game. Likewise, NFV got to the free throw line 32 times and converted on 18. We tried to extend the game in the fourth quarter with fouling, and credit the TigerHawks for hitting enough free throws, keeping us at least two possessions from tying the game,” Wiley said.

The Warriors were out-scored at the free throw line by 10 and out-rebounded by 13. However, they forced 23 turnovers, scoring 21 points from them, and finished with 12 steals.

Haley Frieden led the team with 14 points, followed by Delaney Scherf with nine. Hannah Asche had eight points, Ashlyn Scherf six and Carly Kluesner, Lexi Loan, Kaitlyn Wiley and Grace Kuehl each had two.

“Our effort was there, we just need to continue to work on catching the basketball in offensive rhythm and finish around the rim,” Wiley said.

Central has a three-game schedule this week, starting on Jan. 25 versus Turkey Valley (10-2). The Warriors will then take on Clayton Ridge (3-10) on Jan. 27, before ending the week on Jan. 26 versus South Winneshiek (5-10).
