A limited number of MFL MarMac wrestlers competed in the Doug Trees Bearcat Invitational at North Butler on Jan. 22. It was the only competition for the boys team last week after the Bulldogs opted not to participate in duals at Alburnett on Jan. 20.

Senior Gabe McGeough, who’s lost just once all season, claimed another individual tournament championship at 152 pounds. After byes in the first round and quarterfinal, he advanced to the first place match with a fall. In the finals, he won a 12-5 decision over Lake Mills’ Alex Beaty.

Quinn McGeough also wrestled well on Saturday, coming in second in the 160-pound bracket. The freshman won his quarterfinal match by decision and advanced out of the semifinal on a 7-5 sudden victory. Skyler Schmidt of Tipton pinned him in the first place match.

Wrestling at 170 pounds, senior Kashton Mathis placed fourth. He started the tournament off with a fall, before losing by major decision in the quarterfinal. Mathis rebounded with a fall in the consolation semis, but couldn’t keep the momentum going into the third place match, where he was pinned by Brett Peterson of Lake Mills.

Taylor Herzmann was fifth at 182 pounds. The day got off to a tough start, as the junior lost his quarterfinal match by tie breaker, but he stayed alive with wins in the second and third consolation rounds. Herzmann then lost by fall in the consolation semifinal, but was able to pin Wilton’s Gavin Schnepper in the fifth place match.

MFL MarMac’s final wrestler on Saturday was Collin Henkels, who competed at 195 pounds. The senior lost via fall in his first round match and received a bye in consolation round one. His tournament ended when he was pinned in the second consolation round.

Next up for the Bulldogs are duals at Waukon on Jan. 25. MFL MarMac will then host the Upper Iowa Conference Tournament on Jan. 28.
