Nolan Lerch (220) was one of the few Bulldogs to actually wrestle against a smaller Clayton Ridge squad. He picked up a fall in the dual.

Kashton Mathis earned a fall in his 170-pound match against Riceville. MFL MarMac won the dual 65-11 and went 4-0 overall.

Mackenzie Bachman, wrestling here at the UIC Duals, capped off her week with a third place finish in the 138-pound class at the Central Girls Invitational.

The MFL MarMac wrestling team found success in both dual and tournament action last week, going 4-0 at the Upper Iowa Conference Duals on Jan. 6 and placing third at Maquoketa Valley’s Farr Jebens Invitational on Jan. 8.

The Bulldogs started the UIC Duals against host Clayton Ridge, easily winning 60-17 against the short-handed Eagles. MFL MarMac picked up nearly all its points due to forfeits—the lone win coming from a Nolan Lerch fall at 220 pounds. Austin Schaller was pinned in his 285-pound match, while TJ Coleman lost by technical fall at 106.

It was a 65-11 win over Riceville in the second dual. Jack Vorwald (120), Bryce Radloff (138), Kashton Mathis (170) and Taylor Herzmann (182) contributed to the Bulldog victory with falls, and Gabe McGeough scored a 23-7 technical fall win at 152 pounds. Coleman (106), Holden Mathis (126), Andrew Heins (132), Tristen Koehn (145), Collin Henkels (195) and Lerch (220) all secured wins via forfeit.

MFL MarMac did not send out wrestlers at 113 pounds or heavyweight, and the team’s only loss was at 160, where Quinn McGeough was on the wrong end of a technical fall.

The Bulldogs’ most contested dual was in the third, where they earned a 45-34 advantage over South Winneshiek. The dual started out strong with falls by Gabe McGeough (152) and Austin Schlee (160), followed by an 8-5 decision victory from Kashton Mathis (170). MFL MarMac then went on a tough stretch, losing three straight matches via pin—Herzmann at 182, Henkels at 195 and Lerch at 220—before forfeiting at both heavyweight and 106 pounds. The team quickly got back on track, however, with a forfeit win by Coleman at 113 pounds, then three straight falls for Vorwald (120), Holden Mathis (126) and Heins (132). Radloff lost by technical fall at 138 pounds, but Koehn capped off the win by pinning his 145-pound opponent.

In the final dual, a 66-18 win over Central, the Bulldogs again benefitted from forfeits. But they also picked up two falls: one by Kashton Mathis at 170 and another by Radloff at 138. Avery Thornton (182) and Rylee Kugel (132) were pinned in their respective matches.

In two extra matches, Kadence Pape and Mackenzie Bachman both earned falls.

MFL MarMac wrapped up its week with the Jan. 8 tournament. The team’s 180 points didn’t put them far behind champion Beckman Catholic, which had 187, or second place Notre Dame, Burlington, which finished at 181.5.

The Bulldogs had two individual champions, with Koehn taking the top spot at 145 pounds and Gabe McGeough earning another 152-pound title.

Four other wrestlers—Heins (126), Holden Mathis (132), Radloff (138) and Kashton Mathis (170)—all placed second in their respective brackets, and Keith Anderson was third at 113 pounds.

Quinn McGeough finished fourth at 145 pounds, and Schlee was fourth at 160, while Vorwald came in sixth at 126 and Lerch seventh at 220. Four Bulldogs—Thornton (170), Herzmann (182), Henkels (195) and Schaller (220)—were eighth at their respective weights.

MFL MarMac’s schedule this week includes a dual meet at North Fayette Valley on Jan. 13, then a home tournament on Jan. 15.

Pape, Bachman both place top three at Central Girls Invitational

Bulldog wrestlers Kadence Pape and Mackenzie Bachman performed well at the Central Girls Invitational on Jan. 7, placing second and third in their respective weight classes.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Pape won by fall over Holmen’s Anna Strasser in the 120-pound quarterfinal. She followed that by pinning Sierra Hansmeier of Cresco in the semifinal, but couldn’t keep the momentum going into the first place match, where she lost by fall to East Buchanan’s Destiny Krum.

Bachman, wrestling at 138 pounds, also received a first round bye, and picked up her first win—a fall over Amelia Wadsworth of Decorah—in the quarterfinals. Cresco’s Tierney Perkins scored a narrow 4-1 decision over her in the semifinal, but Bachman bounced back in the third place match by pinning Cresco’s Kyra Butikofer in just 46 seconds.

The girls will wrestle in their next tournament on Jan. 15, at Independence.
