The MFL MarMac girls basketball team remains unbeaten in the Upper Iowa Conference, taking down both Kee and Postville last week, before losing a non-conference match-up to a tough Jesup squad.

The Bulldogs hosted Kee Dec. 14, snagging a convincing 55-24 win. They held the Hawks to an anemic 16.3 field goal percentage and allowed just five points in the entire first half. Additionally, MFL MarMac more than doubled Kee’s rebounding total, 43-22.

The Hawks, meanwhile, struggled to contain Bulldog leading scorer Riley Moreland. The senior finished with 25 points and also had six rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. Junior Grace Anderson added 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block, while senior Miranda Lang chipped in seven points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Junior Ashley Shaw was a key defender for the Bulldogs, with six defensive rebounds, a steal and a block.

MFL MarMac earned another lop-sided win Dec. 17, defeating Postville 76-30. The Pirates struggled to climb out of an early 27-9 hole and managed double digit points in just one quarter—scoring 12 in the second. The Bulldogs brought down 27 defensive rebounds and added an impressive 21 steals and four blocks to the effort.

Offensively, MFL MarMac also performed well, shooting 51.9 percent from the field and draining six shots from behind the arc.

With 29 points, Moreland again proved unstoppable. She also led the team with nine rebounds and five steals and picked up a block and an assist. Anderson finished the night with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks, and Lang pitched in 10 points, four assists, two rebounds and a steal. The stat line for senior Lakota Morrissey included six points, three assists and two steals, while junior Brooklynn Moon had six points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs couldn’t carry that momentum into the Dec. 18 game against Jesup. They stayed close early, trailing just 11-8 after the first period, but the J-Hawks went on a 22-5 run before the half that left MFL MarMac down 20 points. Then, despite out-scoring Jesup 33-28 in the second half, the Bulldogs were unable to cut into the sizeable lead, losing 61-46.

The J-Hawks shot only marginally better than MFL MarMac from the field, at 30.2 to 28.6 percent. However, they got to the line 15 more times and also grabbed 15 steals that contributed to the offensive effort.

It was another double-digit scoring game for Moreland, with 16 points. She also had eight rebounds and two of the team’s three blocks. Moon provided an offensive spark by hitting four of eight shots from three-point range, adding to her 15-point total. She picked up six rebounds as well. Lang tallied five points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs will play just once this week before heading into winter break. The Dec. 21 game at Central, who’s 7-1 overall and also undefeated in the conference, will determine which team sits atop the standings heading into 2022.
