The MFL MarMac girls basketball team is now 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the Upper Iowa Conference, after following up a tough loss to Edgewood-Colesburg early last week with a commanding win over South Winneshiek.

The Vikings led throughout the Dec. 6 game, but really broke away in the fourth quarter of the 67-44 victory. Despite turning the ball over a whopping 32 times, they were aided by a 56.1 field goal percentage—over 20 points higher than the Bulldogs. MFL MarMac particularly struggled from behind the arc, sinking just four of 23 attempts. The Bulldogs were also out-rebounded 30-20.

Ed-Co was able to hold MFL MarMac’s leading scorer, Riley Moreland, in check. The senior finished the night with just four points, but had team highs with six assists, five steals and two blocks. Senior Miranda Lang tallied 15 points along with two steals and an assist, while junior Grace Anderson contributed 10 points, a team leading six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Kaitlin Picha chipped in eight points—six of them from three pointers—along with three steals, two rebounds and two assists.

The Bulldogs got back on track Dec. 7, in a dominant 47-16 win versus South Winn. The Warriors never scored more than six points in a quarter, including just a one-spot in the second period, and shot only 15.6 percent from the field.

MFL MarMac fared little better, with a 23.9 field goal percentage, but out-rebounded South Winn 37-27 and swiped 18 steals. In fact, the Warriors turned the ball over 33 times, more than double the Bulldogs’ total.

Fourteen points returned Moreland to leading scorer status. She also had team highs with eight steals and two blocks, and snagged six rebounds. Anderson was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, and stood out defensively with three steals and a block. Lang’s stat line included eight points, six steals, three rebounds and an assist, while junior Brooklynn Moon had five points and three rebounds. Junior Ashley Shaw picked up four points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to play twice more last week—Dec. 10 at West Central and Dec. 11 in Decorah—but both games were postponed by weather. They’ll play three times this week, hosting conference foes Kee and Postville on Dec. 14 and 17, respectively, before welcoming Jesup on Dec. 18.
