Warrior wrestlers off to solid start

Freshman Reese Berns is off to a strong start, including a win at 113 pounds in a dual against Edgewood-Colesburg.

The Central wrestling season kicked off with a girls meet at home on Nov. 30, with the Warriors winning two of the five duals they participated in.
One of the wins came against Anamosa, which the Warriors won 18-6, taking three of the four matches that took place. Reese Berns started the season out strong with a 33-second pin in the 113-pound weight class, and Brandy Beatty, competing at 126 pounds, added another fall in under two minutes, continuing her success from last season. Tori Sylvester also pinned her opponent at 120 pounds, winning in 1:01. The lone Central loss was Kimberly Suhr, who lost a hard-fought, 120-pound match via fall just before the six-minute mark.
The Warriors next took on Decorah, losing 60-12, though 42 of those points came via wins from forfeit. In actual matches, Central finished with two wins and three losses. The wins came from Beatty at 132 pounds, with a pin in under a minute, and Rebecca Suhr who had a fall at 152 pounds at just over a minute. In the three losses, Berns wrestled at 113 pounds and Sylvester at 126 pounds, and fended off being pinned for over three minutes, while Kimberly Suhr, competing at 120 pounds, also lost via pin.
In the next dual, the Warriors lost to East Buchanan 30-18, dropping two of the three matches that took place. The lone victory came from Beatty (132) with a fall at 2:49, while Sylvester (126) lost via pin in 53 seconds and Rebecca Suhr (152) lost at 59 seconds by pin.
The Warriors found the winners circle against North Fayette Valley, taking the dual 24-18, but 18 of those points came via forfeit. In matches, the Warriors finished 1-1, with Beatty (132) winning via fall in less than a minute, while Rebecca Suhr (152) was pinned around the five-minute mark.
In the final dual of the meet, the Warriors were defeated by Sumner-Fredericksburg 42-12. The Warriors lost two out of three matches, with Berns (113) being the lone winner with a quick pin in 43 seconds. Beatty (126) and Kimberly Suhr (120) both suffered pins.
It was the boys’ turn next with a meet at Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 2, where they went 1-1 in duals.
The first dual against Edgewood-Colesburg was a 48-18 victory, with five wins coming via forfeit for the Warriors and all 18 of Edgewood’s points also coming from forfeits. In matches, the Warriors won all four: two via pin, one by decision and one by sudden victory. Berns (113), competing against the boys, won an 8-4 decision, while Sean Wilwert (182) won the sudden victory 9-6. The two falls were secured by Sam Fettkether (160) and Nate Shirbroun (170).
The Warriors next took on Postville, losing 60-18, with Postville benefiting from six forfeit victories. In matches, the Warriors went 3-4. The victories, all pins, came from Nick Deitchler (132), Daniel Royer (138) and Wilwert (182). Royer won his match in 11 seconds. In the loss column were Rebecca Suhr (152), Fettkether (160), Shirbroun (170) and Joel Thiese (220), who were all pinned.
The final meet of the week saw the Warrior girls at the Decorah Tournament. Berns (109-113) finished 1-2, losing a 9-0 major decision in round one, but rebounding with a pin at 2:49 in round two. She then lost in round three via fall. Sylvester (116-118) won a round one match by fall and Kimberly Suhr (116-120) won a round two match via pin as well. Rebecca Suhr (146-155) went 1-1 in matches, losing in round one by pin, before coming back to get a round three fall. Beatty (125-129) also went 1-1 with a round two fall, followed by a round three pin defeat. In total, the Warriors won five of eight matches.
Central returns to the mat this week with a boys/girls meet at Anamosa on Dec. 7. The team will then travel to Coe College on Dec. 9 for another boys/girls meet, followed by a boys tournament at Nashua-Plainfield on Dec. 11.
