Hot shooting has the MFL MarMac boys basketball team off to a 2-0 start, with wins over Waukon and Turkey Valley last week.

The Bulldogs scored an 87-76 victory against Waukon Nov. 29, in a game in which they made over 47 percent of field goals and 63 percent of shots from behind the arc. It all started with a big first quarter, as MFL MarMac raced out to a 24-17 lead. Waukon had pulled ahead 40-34 by halftime, though, thanks to a big quarter of their own. But the Bulldogs snatched back a narrow advantage in the third period, going up 61-58, then out-scored the Indians 26-18 in the final quarter to seal the 11-point win.

Freshman Zach Driscoll, playing in his first varsity game, had the hot hand for MFL MarMac. He dropped 33 points, including five of six three-point attempts, and also had three rebounds and two assists. Senior Kaden Stocker contributed 14 points—12 of which came from behind the arc—along with four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Another freshman, Parker Kuehl, added 13 points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist, while sophomore Carver Blietz-Bentien’s stat line featured 12 points, a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Bulldogs cooled slightly against Turkey Valley on Nov. 30, but still managed a convincing 68-48 win. The team benefitted from another strong first quarter, going up 23-17, and sustained a 32-27 lead through halftime. MFL MarMac continued to pull away through the third quarter, and wrapped the game with a 22-10 run in the final period to win by 20 points.

The Bulldogs shot over 46 percent from the field, just slightly better than the Trojans, but had an advantage from the three-point line, hitting 47.8 percent to Turkey Valley’s 40 percent. MFL MarMac also out-rebounded the Trojans and snagged a whopping 14 steals, while Turkey Valley managed just four.

Sophomore Wyatt Powell led the effort this night, scoring 21 points. He also had four steals, three assists, one rebound and the team’s lone block. Stocker had another big game from behind the arc, hitting three of five attempts for nine of his 13 total points. He grabbed four rebounds as well. Driscoll also chipped in 13 points—nine of which were from three pointers—and added four steals, four assists and two rebounds. Blietz-Bentien finished with eight points, a team-leading eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Bulldogs will try to keep the momentum going this week, starting at Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 6, then a home game against South Winn on Dec. 7. The team will visit West Central on Dec. 10, followed by a match-up with Lanesboro at Luther College on Dec. 11.
