The MFL MarMac girls basketball team improved to 2-1 last week, rebounding from a close loss to Waukon with a key Upper Iowa Conference victory over Turkey Valley.

The Bulldogs played at Waukon Nov. 29, narrowly losing 37-33. After trailing just 22-20 at halftime, MFL MarMac failed to score in the third quarter, going down 29-20. Although the team went on a 13-8 run in the final period, it wasn’t enough to catch the Indians.

MFL MarMac made just eight of 31 field goals in the game, and hit only two shots from behind the arc. The Indians also swiped 14 steals.

Riley Moreland led the Bulldogs’ scoring effort, with 18 points, and also had a team-high six rebounds, four steals and four blocks. Lakota Morrissey added eight points, two rebounds and a steal, while Miranda Lang finished the night with four points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Grace Anderson contributed just one point, but made a difference with five rebounds and three blocks as well as two assists and two steals.

The Bulldogs were able to bounce back Nov. 30, however, taking down Turkey Valley 46-35. The teams finished the first quarter tied at 13 before MFL MarMac pulled away 21-15 by halftime. Turkey Valley trimmed the advantage to 27-22 at the end of the third quarter, but MFL MarMac finished the game on a 19-13 run to claim the victory.

The Bulldogs improved their field goal percentage to 41.3 percent in this game, far outpacing the 28 percent from the Trojans. They also got to the free throw line six more times, going 7-13.

Anderson notched a team-leading 14 points, and came away with three rebounds and three steals. With 11 points and nine rebounds, Lang finished one rebound away from a double-double. She was also tops in assists, with three, and snagged one steal. Moreland’s stat line included 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

The win upped MFL MarMac to 2-0 in the conference standings—a mark the team hopes to improve upon this week. The first of four games was Dec. 6, at Edgewood-Colesburg, followed by a conference battle against South Winn on Dec. 7. The Bulldogs will then head to West Central on Dec. 10, and play an unspecified opponent in a game in Decorah on Dec. 11.
