Pfizer COVID vaccine approved for ages 5-11

On Nov. 2, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted unanimously to recommend the use of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5–11.  The committee’s recommendation was then approved by the CDC Director later that evening.

The authorization was based on thorough and transparent evaluation of the data that included input from independent advisory committee experts who overwhelmingly voted in favor of making the vaccine available to children in this age group. Some key points for parents and caregivers to consider with the COVID-19 vaccine:

•Effectiveness: Immune responses of children 5 through 11 years of age were comparable to those of individuals 16 through 25 years of age. In addition, the vaccine was found to be 90.7 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 in children 5 through 11.

•Safety: The vaccine’s safety was studied in approximately 3,100 children age 5 through 11 who received the vaccine, and no serious side effects have been detected in the ongoing study.

•Administration: The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age is administered as a two-dose primary series, three weeks apart, but is a lower dose (10 micrograms) than that used for individuals 12 years of age and older (30 micrograms).

Clayton County is anticipating an initial shipment of pediatric COVID vaccine within the upcoming days.  As in the past with other COVID vaccine products, county vaccine providers do not have control over the number of doses made available to them and may not have pediatric Pfizer in stock.

Local public health is working closely with area providers and pharmacy partners to ensure the incoming doses are made available in an efficient manner and will share available pediatric clinics within the county in the coming days.

Parents/guardians who are interested in getting their child age 5-11 vaccinated and would like assistance locating a provider may call the Clayton County Vaccine Wait List line at (563) 245-2064. This line is a voicemail only. Please leave your name and contact information so you can be reached by a public health staff member.
