Wendi Rae Henrickson Ates, 72, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, in her home in Winfield, Ala.

 

Wendi was born Nov. 11, 1948, the daughter of Henry and Geraldine (Henkes) Hendrickson. She graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1966 and later earned a diploma in cosmetology in Iowa City. She continued to work in that salon and later was employed by the University of Iowa.

 

In April 1970, Wendi and Larry Chalupa were joined in marriage. One daughter, Michelle, was born to this union. They were later divorced and, in November 1986, Wendi married Truman Ates.

 

After living in a number of southern states, they made their permanent home in Milton, Fla., until three years ago, when they moved to Winfield, Ala., to be near her daughter and family.

 

Wendi is survived by her husband, Truman; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle (George) Hennicke; grandson, Mason Campbell, and step-grandchildren, Reece and Walter, all of Winfield; mother, Geraldine Hendrickson, McGregor; sister, Nanci (Arthur) Boten, West Des Moines; three nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Hendrickson.

 

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in McGregor. Inurnment will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor.
