The Central cross country team returned to the Silver Springs Golf Club in Ossian for the first time since 2014 last week, and with excellent weather and a healthy group of runners, they put in some remarkable performances in preparation for districts.

The varsity girls team took on highly rated teams and came away with a third place finish in the Upper Iowa Conference. Their 59 points were a mere 17 points behind first-place South Winneshiek and just three points behind second place Kee. But there is always room for improvement

“Both of those margins are very possible for our girls to erase as we still have room to improve since none of our girls had their season best times. Several had their second best time, so we know we can cut the deficits,” coach Martha Bauder said.

The top finisher among the varsity girls was Hannah Asche, in fourth place. Her time of 20:55 will also be credited with a Central record for the 5K distance for the Ossian course. Teammate Jaydin Dettman crossed the finish line seventh with a time of 22:04, while Taylor Moser finished  14th and Delaney Scherf’s run was good enough for 18th.

The JV girls ran a dominant race, with a perfect team score and seven runners finishing inside the top 15. Race winner Haley Mueller was the JV girls champion, and the rest of the Warriors responsible for the perfect team score were Ashlyn Scherf, who finished third, Keeley Curran in fifth, Madylen Gregerson in sixth, Eva Embretson in seventh, Staci Herman in eighth and Mylee Wingert in ninth. Carly Kluesner ran 14th and Rebecca Suhr finished the race 15th.

On the varsity boys side, Gavin Holst’s 11th place finish was the Warriors’ only top-15 finisher and medalist. Brayden Finley ran his way to 22nd place and Corey Weber was 23rd, while Storm Huinker was 40th and Tate Berns finished 46th.

As a team, the boys finished sixth with a score of 130, well behind meet winners North Fayette Valley.

Next up for the Warriors is the district/state qualifying meet on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Fillmore Fairways Golf Course in Cascade.
