Clayton County voters interested in voting absentee for the Nov. 2nd city/school election may file request forms with the Clayton County Auditor’s Office.

The new legislation has shortened the number of days that the Auditor’s Office may have ballots available for absentee voting. Voters now have 20 days to vote absentee either by mail or in-person rather than 29 days.

Voters wishing to receive a ballot by mail for the City/School election will need to complete an absentee ballot request form and return it to the Clayton County Auditor’s Office, 111 High St NE – Suite 102, Elkader, IA 52043, before 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.

Due to recent legislation, requests for a mailed ballot must be received 15 days before the election (formerly 11 days). Ballots requested through the mail must be received by the Auditor’s Office by 8 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted.

In-person absentee voting in the Auditor’s Office is anticipated to start Oct. 13 where voting will be available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, through Nov. 1.

More election information and absentee ballot request forms can be found on the Clayton County Elections website at elections.claytoncountyia.gov or at the Iowa Secretary of State’s website at sos.iowa.gov. Forms may also be requested by calling the Clayton County Auditor’s Office at (563) 245-1106.
