MFL MarMac’s bid for another late-game victory fell short Sept. 17, as the Bulldogs lost 16-14 at Columbus Catholic. The district opener marked the team’s first loss this season.

The Bulldogs were trailing 16-8 with less than four minutes remaining in the game when quarterback Carver Blietz-Bentien connected with Brandon Christofferson on a 32-yard reception. Bryce Radloff then scored from seven yards out, giving MFL MarMac an opportunity to tie the game on a two-point conversion, but fullback Gabe McGeough was tripped up well short of the goal line.

The Sailors converted two third downs on their following series, running down the clock and keeping the Bulldogs from another scoring chance.

Columbus Catholic tallied most of its points in the first two quarters, with a pair of rushing touchdowns putting the team up 13-0 at halftime. The Sailors out-gained the Bulldogs 161 yards to 27 in that span. MFL MarMac kept them close thanks to defensive stops—including a Radloff interception—in two fourth-and-goal situations.

The Bulldogs—after capitalizing on an interception by Kaden Stocker—finally got on the board in the third quarter. A 31-yard touchdown run by McGeough, followed by a two-point conversion, made it 13-8.

A Columbus Catholic field goal later in the quarter upped the Sailor advantage to 16-8. From then on, it was a defensive battle.

The Bulldogs were held to under 200 yards rushing for the first time this season. McGeough had 89 of the 168 yards, along with a touchdown, on 13 carries. Radloff added 40 yards and a touchdown on four carries, while Cullen McShane had 32 yards on 10 attempts.

Blietz-Bentien threw the ball just four times, his only completion the 32-yard grab by Christofferson.

The Sailors, meanwhile, totaled 271 offensive yards. Quarterback Carter Gallagher, despite throwing two costly interceptions, was 15-25 passing for 131 yards. He also ran the ball 12 times, racking up 50 yards and scoring two times.

The Bulldogs sacked Gallagher twice, both by Tristen Koehn, who led the team with 11 tackles. McGeough was close behind with 10.5 tackles, while Stocker had 9.5, McShane 7 and Wyatt Powell 6.5.

The loss dropped MFL MarMac’s overall record to 3-1 and district mark to 0-1. The team will look to bounce back against Sumner-Fredericksburg (2-2) this Friday, Sept. 24. The match-up, which will start at 7:30 p.m. in Monona, is the Bulldogs’ homecoming game.
