Central volleyball team gets two more wins at Waukon Tournament

The Central volleyball team lost its conference opener to North Fayette Valley on Sept. 16, then went 2-3 in the Waukon Tournament on Saturday, defeating Postville and Riceville, while dropping matches to Waukon, Spring Grove and MFL MarMac. The Warriors now have a season record of 5-17. 

 

Central dropping all three sets and the match to North Fayette Valley. The set scores were 25-15, 25-11 and 25-18, all in favor of the TigerHawks. 

 

The Warrior offense finished with 10 assists and 16 kills on 67 attempts, with 15 errors. Elizabeth Royer led the offense with five assists, followed by Gracie Cummer with four and Lexi Loan with one. Chelsia Larson totaled the most kills with five, while Loan finished with four, Katelyn Scherf had three, Isabelle Groth had two and Royer and Tori Sylvester each had one. 

 

The Warriors struggled defensively, finishing the game with just two blocks and three digs. Cummer and Scherf each had one block, while Cummer added two digs to her stat line and Alivia Keppler grabbed a dig. 

 

As for serving, the Warriors had just one ace, which was hit by Cummer. The team was successful on 38 of 46 attempts, for a serve efficiency rating of 82.6 percent. 

 

The Warriors started the Waukon Tournament taking on Spring Grove early in the morning, where they lost both sets, 21-9 and 21-15. 

 

The offense put up six assists, with Cummer and Royer both getting three. Loan had a team high five kills, while Larson finished with two and Cummer added one. Overall, the offense had eight kills on 38 attempts with 12 errors. 

 

On defense, the Warriors had one block from Groth and finished with 23 total digs. Loan and Alyson Feickert led the way with seven. Three other players, Brandy Beatty, Larson and Groth, each finished with two digs. 

 

Loan had the team’s only ace, and the Warriors finished with a perfect 100 percent serve efficiency.  

 

Central next took on the 9-7 Waukon Indians, where they won the first set 21-18, but lost the next two, 21-11 and 15-12, to lose the match. 

 

Giorgia Baiguini—who had six of the team’s eight assists and had one kill—led the offense. Royer had the other two assists. The team had 12 total kills on 54 attempts with 14 errors. Three players, Loan, Groth and Feickert, each had three kills, and Scherf and Alexis Fettkether each had one. 

 

The Warrior defense came away with five blocks and 33 digs, with Cummer getting three blocks and Larson finishing with two along with three digs. Loan led the way with 11 total digs, followed by Feickert with nine, Baiguini with four and Keppler and Royer with three apiece. 

 

In the serving department, the Warriors had three aces, two by Loan and one from Feickert. The team was successful on 37 out of 40 attempts for a 92.5 percent serve efficiency. 

 

In the next game, the Warriors won their first match of the week, taking down the winless Postville Pirates 2-1. The Warriors won the first set 21-11, then narrowly lost the second 21-18, but pulled out the victory in set three with a 15-10 score. 

 

The offense put up 13 assists, with seven from Baiguini and six from Royer, and the Warriors had 19 kills on 59 attempts with 14 errors. Loan led the offense with seven kills, followed by Groth with six, Cummer with three, Larson with two and Feickert with one. 

 

The defense didn’t record a block, but amassed 57 digs throughout the match, as Feickert and Loan each had 15, Keppler and Royer had seven apiece and Beatty and Larson each had five. 

 

On the serving side, the team hit six aces, three from Feickert, two from Loan and one from Larson. The Warriors were also successful on 51 out of 53 attempts, finishing the game with a 96.2 percent efficiency. 

 

In the next match, the Warriors took on the 2-10 Riceville Wildcats. They lost the first set 21-16, battled back to win the second 21-19, and then won the match with a third set victory of 15-7. 

 

The Warrior offense put up 10 assists, with Royer leading the way with seven, Baiguini with two and Larson with one. The team also complied 14 kills on 61 attempts with eight errors. Loan finished with a team-high seven kills, followed by Larson and Feickert with two each. Cummer, Scherf and Groth each had one kill. 

 

The Warrior defense finished with eight blocks, with Larson coming away with five and Cummer getting three. They totaled 48 digs for the game, and Feickert led all players with 15. Loan and Keppler tallied 10, Baiguini had five, Royer had three and Larson finished with two. 

 

Central also had seven aces, four from Larson and three from Feickert, and were successful on 41 out of 51 serve attempts for an 80.4 percent efficiency. 

 

In the final match of the tournament, the Warriors faced 3-5 MFL MarMac, losing in straight sets by scores of 21-12 and 21-17. 

 

The offense put up 11 assists, with Baiguini leading the team with six and Royer adding the other five. The Warriors also had 12 kills on 33 attempts with seven errors. Loan had a team high four kills, with Groth and Feickert both getting three apiece. 

 

The Warrior defense recorded three blocks, with two from Larson and one from Cummer, and finished the game with 21 digs. Beatty and Feickert led the defense with seven digs each, Larson grabbed three, Loan got two and Royer and Scherf each had one. 

 

The Warriors added three aces, two from Larson and one by Feickert, and were successful on 24  of 30 attempts for a serve efficiency of 80 percent. 

 

This week, the Warriors will host Kee on Sept. 21, then go on the road Sept. 23 against South Winn. Central concludes the week with the Decorah Tournament on Sept. 25.
