The Central cross country team turned in another impressive performance Sept. 16, at their lone home meet of the season. The varsity girls finished a strong second behind meet winners South Winneshiek.

In a field of 76 runners, the varsity girls had two top-10 finishers, with Hannah Asche crossing third and Jaydin Dettman finishing fourth; both were medalists at the meet. Delaney Scherf and Taylor Moser finished inside the top 20, as Scherf ran in 16th and Moser finished 20th.

Overall, the team scored 62 points, 15 points out of first place. Other notable runners were Kaitlyn Wiley in 21st place, Reese Berns in 31st, Gracie Cummer in 32nd and Ashlyn Scherf in 35th. Season best times were achieved by Madylen Gregerson in 49th and Carly Kluesner in 66th.

As for the varsity boys, they were running a man down, as Gavin Holst was unable to compete due to an illness, putting all the pressure on Corey Weber and Brayden Finley. In a field of 107 runners, both finished inside the top 30, with Weber placing 18th in a course best time of 19:45. Finley crossed in 30th place, also in a course best time. Tate Berns finished 85th. Central was unable to compete for a team score.

“The day and home course were beautiful, but with pretty warm temps and a slightly long course, we didn’t have as many personal bests. We did run competitively, though,” said coach Martha Bauder. “The girls team had their best split between the top five runners of our last four meets, which showed that trying to run as a group as long as we can will most often give us the best team score. It was good to be only 15 points behind South Winn, who leads the state rankings in class 1A.”

The cross country team returns to action Sept. 21, with a meet at the Waukon Golf and Country Club at 4 p.m.
