Bulldogs face stiff competition at Starmont, Central meets

The MFL MarMac boys and girls cross country teams faced tough competition in races at Starmont and Central last week. 

 

In the Sept. 14 Starmont Invitational, the Bulldog girls ran against a 24-team field that included nearly a dozen 2A and 3A schools, placing sixth among 1A squads. 

 

Abby Schellhorn was the top finisher, coming in 56th with a time of 23:35.16. Clare Grau wasn’t far behind, running the course in 24:11.13 to place 64th. Ayla Gerndt was 88th at 25:33.18, Evelyn Ruff was 97th at 25:51.02, Kaylee Walch was 101st at 26:17.24 and Ruby Koeller was 111th at 28:07.83.

 

The boys field at Starmont included 26 teams. The Bulldogs tallied 174 points, putting them eighth of 10 full 1A teams. 

 

The best time came from Caleb Nordheim, who crossed the line 55th at 19:44.83. Finishing 82nd, with a 20:41.71 time, was Will Koether, while Tucker Ruff was 84th at 20:42.90. Bobby Kober turned in a time of 21:43.54 to place 105th, and Hunter Kugel and Reilly Franzen were 144th and 145th, respectively, with times of 26:03.28 and 29:17.54. 

 

The MFL MarMac girls turned in another sixth-place team finish at the Sept. 16 Central Invitational. Grau headed up the group this time, with a run of 24:25.6 placing her 19th. Ruff completed the course in 25:11.9—good for 22nd—and Walch was 33rd at 26:43.5. Tricia Bacon’s time of 27:40.7 put her 38th, while Koeller was 43rd at 28:23.7, Alexis Ross was 56th at 29:37.3, Kaylee Nuehring was 65th at 31:37.9, Cadence Weber was 68th at 32:43.9 and Mya Nelson was 76th at 39:54.3.

 

In the boys race, the Bulldogs were sixth of seven full teams. The duo of Nordheim and Koether led the effort, placing 22nd and 23rd, respectively, with times of 20:17.3 and 20:19.6. Not far behind was Ruff, whose 20:31.5 put him 26th. Finishing 45th, at 21:42.8, was Kober, and Kugel was 89th at 27:12.7. Franzen came in 98th at 29:56.7, Logan Ross 100th at 30:43.5 and Dusty Berns 102nd at 30:49.2.

 

MFL MarMac will compete just once this week, running at Waukon on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
