Iowa State Senator Liz Mathis visited Elkader on Labor Day, for a meet and greet sponsored by the Clayton County Democrats.
Mathis came to Elkader to view the remnants of the flood, speak with locals about pressing issues, and to remind voters she is running for U.S. Representative for Iowa’s first congressional district, challenging for the seat currently held by Republican Ashley Hinson.
Mathis spoke about her history in northeast Iowa, her life as a reporter and the importance of service, mental health advocacy and voting rights. She also touched on her belief in fairness as a politician and how she differs from Hinson on issues.
Mathis answered questions from those in attendance on issues ranging from flood mitigation, the filibuster, the recent Texas abortion law and how citizens can engage in the political process.
In a separate interview, Mathis spoke about working well with others, women’s reproductive rights, affordable healthcare and the importance of children’s mental health.
“If we invest in children, we invest in the future,” Mathis said.
