Central girls finish second at third at recent meets

The Central cross country team continues to produce solid results, with the girls getting a second place finish in the meet at Clayton Ridge, followed by a very close third place finish at North Fayette Valley. The boys squad, led by freshman Gavin Holst, also continues to make strides toward the top spots.
At the Sept. 7 Clayton Ridge meet, three Central runners finished in the top 12 in the varsity field of 80 participants. Hannah Asche was the top finisher in third with a time of 21:18, followed by Jaydin Dettman, who ran a course best time of 23:10 to place seventh. Delaney Scherf finished 11th. All three girls were medalists.
The Warriors also placed three more runners in the top 20, with Taylor Moser in 16th, Kaitlyn Wiley in 18th and Reese Berns, who ran a season best time of 25:18, in 19th. Overall, the Warriors finished with a team score of 53, just six points shy of defeating meet winner Sumner-Fredericksburg.
On the varsity boys side, out of 65 runners, Central had three finish inside the top 10. Holst was the top finisher in fourth place with a 19:40, followed closely by Corey Weber in fifth at 19:58. Brayden Finley finished eighth in a season best time of 20:15. All three boys were medalists.
“From a team aspect, we did well, finishing a close six points to first place. We are confident that we can improve on that six-point spread in the future. It was just great to have a chance to run in this meet and gain some more experience and confidence,” said coach Martha Bauder.
Central followed up this performance with another well-rounded effort at North Fayette Valley on Sept. 9. The varsity girls, in a field of 79 runners, placed three in the top 12 and five in the top 20.
Asche was once again the fastest Warrior, finishing third in a course best time of 21:15. She was followed by Dettman, who placed fifth in a course best 23:10, while Scherf took home 11th place. Moser and Berns also finished in the top 20, with Moser 17th in a course best time of 24:45, while Berns finished 18th with a season best time of 25:04.
In a field of six complete teams, the Warriors finished in third with a score of 54, just two points behind Dike New Hartford and North Fayette Valley, who both scored 52.
As for the varsity boys, in a field of 85 runners, only Holst finished inside the top 20 with a 17th-place effort. He did it running a season best 19:16. Teammates Weber and Finley finished 27th and 37th, respectively, both in course best times. As a team, the Warriors finished sixth out of eight teams with a score of 168.
“Weather continues to make for some excellent meets this season—and the nice temps with no wind made for nearly everyone to have reason to feel like they did better—which is what we try to do day in and day out. Our team finishes were good for us. We were competitive, with the boys finally having a team score finishing sixth for the first time in over two years. The girls were just two points away from the two teams who tied for first place, so, competitively, we did great. We feel extremely confident that we can build on that and do better in the weeks to come,” Bauder said.
The Warriors next compete at the Elkader Golf and Country Club for the team’s only home meet of the season on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m.
