Catherine Ann Steger, 87, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2021, surrounded by family.

Catherine was born on May 12, 1934, to Frank and Clara (Sprosty) Mezera in Eastman. She was a graduate of Seneca High School, where she played saxophone in the band. In 1957, she married John Steger and became a full partner in life and in operation of a dairy and crop farm. She went on to have five children: Thomas (Rene’), Greg (Diane), Delores “Dee” (Dan) Kussmaul, Donald (Wendy) and Robert (Corrine). Besides farming and raising her children in the Catholic faith, she was active in the Irish Ridge Homemakers group and was a regular contributor to church bake sales. She could always be counted on to have good food readily available. Whether produce from her big garden, blackcap jelly made from berries picked on the farm, canned fruit and veggies or any various desserts, Catherine was always ready to share with family and friends. She did much sewing over the years, making clothes when the kids were young and doing patching as they all got older. Many hours were spent playing board games, playing cards and assembling jigsaw puzzles with the family to the enjoyment of all.

Along with her five children, she is survived by 15 grandchildren, Kristina, Maria (Martin) Corral and Scott; Andrew (Sabrina) and Kaitlyn (Adam) Junk; Michael (Kristina), Ashley and Jeffrey (Cortney); Ryan, Alison and Anna; and Makayla, Victoria, Andrew, Joseph; also 13 great-grandchildren, Ryker, Raidan, Carter, Isabella, Dax, Lenyx, Ayden, Landyn, Addyson, David, Emelia, Maverick and Elliot.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Frank and Clara; grandson, Jonathan; and her 10 siblings, Donald, Sister Frances Claire, Lucille, Dorothy, Rose, Francis, Clement, Harold, Mary Rita and Lawrence.

She will be greatly missed. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, July 31, at 10:30 a.m. at St Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Monsignor Charles Stoetzel officiating with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
