Rhett Koenig

Matt Rogge

Rhett Koenig, a junior to be this fall at Prairie du Chien High School, and Matt Rogge, a freshman to be at Augsburg University this fall, both earned All-American status this past week at the 2021 USA Wrestling Junior and 16U National Championships held at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota, July 17-23. This summer marked the 50th USA Wrestling Junior National Championships, a major high school competition which has had a tremendous impact on the sport in our nation.

This is the first time in PdC wrestling history that a wrestler has earned All American status. This is no small task, because the nation’s best wrestlers come to Fargo to battle to become an All American (only the top eight placewinners). Koenig earned his All American status in the 126# 16U Division by placing seventh. Koenig’s bracket had 89 of the best Greco Roman wrestlers in the nation. After receiving a first round bye, Koenig would defeat his Iowa opponent by technical fall 12-1 in the round of 64. In the round of 32, Koenig would be defeated by his Pennsylvania opponent 6-0. This opponent would go on to win the championship. In the consolation round of 32, Koenig would beat his Oklahoma opponent by technical fall 11-0. In the consolation round of 16#1, Koenig would score an 11-0 technical fall over his Colorado opponent. In the consolation round of 16#2 Koenig would again win by technical fall, this time winning 12-0 over his Minnesota opponent. In the consolation round of 8#1, Koenig would win 8-6 over a Wisconsin opponent. In the consolation round of 8#2, Koenig beat his New York opponent 3-1 to secure All American status. In the consolation round of 4, Koenig would lose 10-0 to an opponent from South Dakota, who would go on to finish third. In the seventh-place match, Koenig defeated his opponent from Washington 4-1.

Rogge earned his All American status in the 160# Junior Division by placing seventh. Rogge’s bracket had 99 of the best Greco Roman wrestlers in the nation. In the round of 128, Rogge would win by technical fall over his Oregon opponent 12-0. In the round of 64, Rogge would win by technical fall 12-1 over his opponent from Illinois. In the round of 32, Rogge would again win by technical fall 13-1 over his South Dakota opponent. In the round of 16, Rogge would lose 14-10 to an opponent from Connecticut. In the consolation round of 16#2, Rogge would win by technical fall 14-2 over his Ohio opponent. In the consolation round of 8#2, Rogge would win by technical fall 18-6 over his opponent from New York to secure All American status. In the consolation round of 4, Rogge would be defeated 5-3 by his opponent from Georgia, an opponent who would go on to finish third. In the seventh-place match, Rogge defeated his opponent from Illinois by fall.

Congratulations to these two young men on their accomplishments!
