Darwin McClain Hallberg, 88, of McGregor, Iowa, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa.  

Darwin was born Feb. 2, 1932, to Henry and Marie (Bachtell) Hallberg in McGregor. He graduated from McGregor High School in 1950. Darwin joined and proudly served in the United States Marines from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean War. Darwin was united in marriage with Patricia Wagner on May 2, 1959, at St Mary’s Catholic Church, McGregor. Two children were born to this union. They later divorced. Throughout the years, he worked as a truck driver, retiring from Family Dollar. Darwin was always a hard worker, including working on the farm with crops and cattle. He remained active and enjoyed having a “Mug Beer” during happy hour with his friends at the Riverview and Pocket City Pub. Darwin looked forward to having morning coffee with friends at their house and never missed a family get together.

Surviving Darwin are his two children, Darci (Tom Burke) Jones of McGregor, Iowa and Gregg (Shelly) Hallberg of McGregor, Iowa; six grandchildren, Peter (Chelsey), Anna (Don), Sara and Adam (Cydney) Jones and Tayler and  Alison (Ren) Hallberg; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lynn (Gay) Hallberg and Keith (Laurie) Hallberg, all of McGregor; sisters, Maureen Hansen of Palo, Iowa, Janann Lang of McGregor, Zola Hallberg of Sparta, and Connie (Paul) Christianson of Guttenberg, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Hallberg; parents, Henry and Marie Hallberg; brothers, LaVern Hallberg and Neil Hallberg; sister, Patricia Jorgensen; nieces, Laurie Hansen (later in 2020), Erin Hallberg; nephew, Dan Hallberg; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Hansen and John Lang; and a great-grandson, Jaxson Jones.

A Memorial Service will be held at First Lutheran Church in McGregor on Saturday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m. with a military graveside service.
