Renovation of classrooms continues at Central, playground work to start soon

School might be out for the summer but there’s still plenty of activity at Central.
The renovation of several classrooms continues. The project is mostly on schedule, superintendent Nick Trenkamp said at a recent board meeting. Some materials are back-ordered until September but, overall, he is pleased with the project’s progress. Work will soon begin on the new elementary playground. A $170,000 contract was recently award to Park Planet Playground Equipment. Trenkamp hopes the project will be completed by the time school begins.
A number of students remain engaged in summer school classes that run the gamut from kayaking to ACT prep to trout fishing. The four week-long sessions consist of more than a dozen offerings that were determined using the results of student interest surveys.
In other news, the board offered its support for a future FFA trip to South America, where students will have an opportunity to learn about agricultural practices there. They also approved use of the Central logo on flags that will be sold as a fundraiser. The board also received an update on a proposed garage-shed construction project. Board member Jered Finley and Trenkamp recently attended an Elkader Zoning Committee meeting where no apparent issues with the proposal were raised by the committee.
The board also appointed Josh Embretson to fill the vacancy created by the death of board member Taylor Alexie.
