Jimmy 'Cowboy Jim' W. Reneau
Jimmy “Cowboy Jim” Wayne Reneau died peacefully in his home in McGregor, on the morning of Sunday, June 27, 2021. He is remembered by his many friends and neighbors of the Prairie du Chien, Marquette and McGregor area. A celebration of his life will take place at the shelter by the river in McGregor on the afternoon of Aug. 1. All are invited.
Cowboy Jim was born in Greenville, Texas, on Sept. 25, 1951. Born to James and Anna Reneau, he worked alongside his parents buying, selling and framing art for the family’s art gallery. Jim also had his own body shop in Texas as well as being a part owner at one time of The Texas Electric Lounge. He also worked as a maintenance man, cook, in commercial fishing and a transporter, among other things. Though a man of meager means, Cowboy enjoyed travelling the states as well trips to Canada and Spain. He also had a few notable excursions down to old Mexico. Jim participated in the many nonpolitical aspects of the counterculture of the 60s and 70s. He arrived in Prairie du Chien while working for a subcontracting company employed by Cabelas in 2006. The rivers, the bluffs and the community he found at the Main Entrance led him to become a resident of PdC and then, for the rest of his life, downtown McGregor. He enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting, and loved all art, especially live music. He was a staple within communities of the Main Entrance and The Tavern, and he was also dedicated to local and regional bird conservation. Jim was also known for his rooftop garden and particularly his delicious tomatoes, which have received some regional notoriety.
Cowboy Jim Reneau was a man of the most admirable human qualities. He was humble, he was interested in the least amongst us, he was generous though he had nothing, he was forgiving though he had been betrayed. He saw the world as beautiful, his community as gracious and the future as one of unending possibilities. His own style was simple yet extravagant. He could not help but be noticed, though he did not seek attention. He was a great friend to many and appreciated the help and thoughts of his many friends at the end of his life. From the sweet grass to the packing house, Cowboy Jim Reneau led a life of experiences, and one worth remembering.
