James Robert Helle, 90, of Edgewood, formerly of Colesburg, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood. 

Visitation was Wednesday, June 23, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and before services at the church on Thursday.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 24, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colesburg, conducted by Reverend John Haugen.

Interment was in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Colesburg.

Jim was born on Nov. 11, 1930, in Greeley, the son of William and Anastacia (Maiers) Helle. He was raised in the Delaware County area and attended St. Joseph Catholic school in Earlville.

On Oct. 17, 1950, Jim was united in marriage to Joann Hogan at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colesburg. Five children were born to this union. Jim along with Joann were dairy farmers in the Colesburg area. Jim and Joann also worked as DHIA testers for Clayton County for 30 years.

Jim enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and Saturday nights out dancing. In later years Jim enjoyed visiting the casino and traveling to the western states. Jim most enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

Survivors include his five children, Barbara (Layton) Hansel of Greeley, Sharon (Michael) Schmelzer of Garnavillo, Gordon (LouAnn) Helle of Elkader, Sandy (Randy) Backes of Edgewood, and Steve (Shelly) Helle of Colesburg; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Helle of Manchester; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Lavern “Bud” Domeyer of Petersburg, Jack (Carolyn) Hogan of Colesburg, and Phil (Deanna) Hogan of New Vienna.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Joann; his parents; two sisters, Ardella (Matt) Bildstein and Alice (William) Bockenstedt; one brother, Marvin (Olga) Helle; brother-and sisters-in-law, Vincent (Helen) Hogan, Ellen Domeyer and Esther Helle.
