Stolen camper recovered, arrest made

On June 12, at 3 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a stolen camper from D & J Topper and RV, in the township of Bridgeport.

A 2010 AmeriLite by Gulf Stream was stolen from the property and driven away. Law enforcement began to work with local area businesses for video footage of the crime.

On June 16, video footage of the camper and suspect vehicle were obtained. Law enforcement released the information to the public via social media of the suspect’s truck involved in the crime. After a few minutes, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by the town of Campbell Police. The suspected truck and the owner of the truck were located in La Crosse. 

Jeffrey A. Smizek, 51, La Crosse, was questioned about the location of the stolen camper. Smizek stated the camper was located at Goose Island Campground. Law enforcement located and recovered the camper. Some property related to other thefts, from other jurisdictions, was recovered. Property owned by Smizek as well as receipts from the campground in Smizek’s name were located. Smizek is being held in La Crosse County Jail. Charges have been referred to the Crawford County District Attorney for theft, Class H felony property with a value of $5,000-$10,000. 

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by town of Campbell Police, The Port, Milo’s Towing, and Goose Island Campground.
