After several months of discussion, the Marquette City Council, at its June 8 regular meeting, approved final passage of an ordinance to increase the base fee for sewer from $8.25 to $10 and the base fee for water from $3 to $4.

The sewer increase will take effect July 1, but water will not go up until Jan. 1, 2022.

The city’s solar projects, including one that helps power the sewer plant, have helped offset some expenses. Mayor Steve Weipert reported that, combined, the solar projects saved Marquette  $3,000 last month. However, the city said raising water and sewer rates was necessary.

“Water has been staying even, but sewer has gone in the red,” said Weipert at a previous meeting. “You need to try to break even, or put money aside.”

Speed sign purchase OK’d

The council gave the go-ahead to the Mar-Mac Police Department to purchase a TC-600  radar speed sign for $3,493.25.

Police chief Robert Millin said the sign will collect traffic data that can be reported to receive grant funding through the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) administered by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. The department saw a reduction in sTEP grant funding from $4,300 to just $600 in fiscal year 2021 due to having insufficient traffic data.

The city of McGregor has agreed to cost share for this and another previously purchased radar speed sign in order to collect data needed for future grants.

The two signs will be the property of the police department, and will be placed throughout the two communities.
