Max Havlicek continued to pitch well for the Bulldogs, allowing one hit, one walk and one earned run in an inning against Postville on June 1. He then worked five strong innings against South Winn on June 3, surrendering seven hits, two walks and just one earned run. He struck out five South Winn batters.

The MFL MarMac baseball team is now 3-5, following a doubleheader sweep of Postville and close losses to Waukon and South Winneshiek last week.

The Bulldogs kicked off the action June 1, shutting out Postville 11-0 in game one of a home doubleheader. MFL MarMac players had just five hits, but walked six times and swiped a whopping 14 bases, providing plenty of RBI opportunities. The offense pushed across five runs in the second inning, then three each in the third and fourth.

Landon Johnson had a big night at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Logan Engelhardt singled, walked, drove in a run and scored twice, while Kaden Stocker doubled, walked, knocked in two runs and scored once himself.

Jacob Schellhorn had a dominant outing on the mound, holding the Pirates to just two hits in five innings, while racking up 11 strikeouts.

The Bulldogs also won game two handily, 17-2, thanks to a 10-run offensive outburst in the first inning. They added four more runs in the second inning and three in the fourth to seal the victory.

MFL MarMac was all over the base paths in this game too, picking up six hits and 14 walks and stealing another 14 bases—including two each by Stocker, Elias Hatt, Max Havlicek and Chauncy Drahn.

Schellhorn was the team’s hit leader, going 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hatt singled, walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Drahn singled, walked, knocked in two runs and scored once, while Johnson singled, tallied two RBIs and crossed the plate once.

Havlicek pitched the first inning for the Bulldogs, allowing one hit, one walk and one earned run. Bryce Radloff followed that up with three innings of one-hit ball. He gave up only one run, while walking three batters, hitting one and striking out four.

Unfortunately, MFL MarMac couldn’t keep the offensive momentum going in the June 2 match-up with Waukon. The team scratched out four hits and stole five bases, but could only muster two runs in a 4-2 loss to the Indians.

Havlicek had two of the Bulldogs’ four hits, including a double, stole three bases and scored once. Schellhorn singled and scored a run, while Drahn singled and drove in a run.

Stocker took the loss after surrendering seven hits, five walks, a hit batter and one earned run over seven innings. He also had six strikeouts.

It was another close game June 3, as the Bulldogs narrowly lost to South Winn, 4-3. The Warriors led 3-1 through the top of the fifth inning, when MFL MarMac crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the fifth to even the score 3-3. South Winn responded with one run in the sixth, however, to grab the conference victory.

South Winn pitchers combined to strike out 18 Bulldog batters, who reached base on five hits and three walks. The Bulldogs also nabbed another five bases, including two by Cullen McShane.

Drahn finished the game 2-3, and McShane doubled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored once. Schellhorn was 1-4 with a run scored.

Havlicek pitched five strong innings for the Bulldogs, allowing seven hits, two walks and just one earned run. He struck out five South Winn batters. Drahn gave up one hit, one walk and one earned run over the final two innings.

The Bulldogs will play seven times this week, including a June 7 doubleheader with Turkey Valley, before heading to Assumption on June 8 and Edgewood-Colesburg on June 9. The team will then play at North Fayette Valley on June 10 and conclude the week at Kee with a June 11 doubleheader.
