Each year the State Library provides a summer reading program for public libraries throughout Iowa. This year's 2021 theme — Reading Colors Your World — will cover a broad range of topics exploring humanity, nature, culture, and science as well as developing library programming that encourages libraries and patrons to expand their world. Patrons young and old will be encouraged to be creative, try new things, explore art, and find beauty in diversity through kindness, growth, and community. The State Library supports public libraries around the state and promotes a vigorous summer library program.

Reading Colors Your World

The Guttenberg Public Library's summer reading program will be held each Friday at 2 p.m. in Ingleside Park's north gazebo from June 14 - July 24. Children's programing will include a visit from Iowa State Extension, Clayton County Conservation, and local library programming. "We will hold in-person children's programming outdoors this summer – weather permitting," said Katie Bietzel, library director. "We are excited to be able to safely gather together for our summer reading program. We will not have a reading challenge or awards program due to our outdoor location, but we still encourage children and teens to challenge themselves through reading. We are challenging adults to 'Read Around the World' through literature. There will be a list available for interested patrons."

The library has re-opened to the public and requests patrons wear masks and practice social distancing. "Our 'Fairy House' is up and full of interactive fairy-themed activities, and a fun scavenger hunt for younger library patrons," said Nancy Ruzicka, assistant/children's librarian. "Our storywalk book; Scribble Stones, by Diane Alber, will coincide with the Library Foundation's rock painting program."

Magician Mike Prestby

Magician Mike Prestby will entertain library patrons on July 16 at 2 p.m. at Ingleside Park. The program is sponsored by the Guttenberg Library Foundation.

Magician Prestby has been performing for libraries for over ten years. His programs are filled with comedy, magic, storytelling, live animals, puppets and lots of audience participation, while promoting reading and library use.
