A metaphysical/New Age store called Angel411 has opened in downtown McGregor, in the Creative Enz Salon and Spa building, offering unique gifts as well as readings by owner Linda Calkins.

“I’ve worked in natural and metaphysical stores for many years. I’m very comfortable doing this,” said Calkins, who was inspired as a young girl, watching the film The Three Lives of Thomasina. “There was a lady who lived in the woods and everyone came to her for herbal stuff. I watched that movie and was like, ‘I want to be her when I grow up.’”

Calkins also began her own spiritual journey—and tapping into her intuition—at a young age.

“It’s always kind of been there. I’ve always felt a connection,” she recalled. “The other day, the bible came up, and I had totally forgotten, but when I was 14, I read the whole bible. Looking back, I think it’s what spiritual seekers do. They want to find out everything from everywhere they can.”

Over 20 years ago, Calkins read a Sylvia Browne book, which she said helped a lot, as have several mentors. And, like anything else, education and practice have been key too.

“I don’t know anyone who just starts offering readings—you can’t do that because you have to be super confident. I practiced for a long time. I got my cards and played with them, and my readings evolved. The more you do readings, and the more you’re around people, the more you start trusting your intuition,” she shared. “Everybody has intuition. It’s just what you do with it.”

Calkins first started offering readings professionally at a store in Appleton, Wis. Now, she has clients from all over the world, whom she meets with both in person and over the phone.

“Phone readings are just as viable as one in person because it’s all about energy,” she explained.

Calkins, who also has mediumship skills and has even done some pet communication, starts her readings with cards.

“That’s usually my starting point and will tell me what to look for. Then it’s just trusting what comes to you. That’s what I stress,” she said. “I believe what I do is to help other people trust their own intuition and not depend on somebody else. So many people are afraid they’re going to make the wrong choice, but there’s no right or wrong choice—only choices with different consequences, and you have to decide which consequences you want to live with.”

What prompted her to open the store and begin offering readings in McGregor? Calkins attributed it to the need for change as well as a personal medical situation.

For the past four years, she’d worked in medical transport, taking people to doctor’s appointments.

“That’s a bad place for an empath to be, and I absorbed a lot of it,” she quipped. “I felt like it was sucking the life out of me.”

In December, a cough she thought was bronchitis sent her to the doctor, where an X-ray detected a mass on her left lung.

“I didn’t feel it was cancer—I didn’t feel sick enough—but I said, ‘just take it out,’” Calkins shared. “In January, I had half my lung removed and some lymph nodes. No cancer at all. That gave me the space to let my dream come true. That was the push I needed.”

Angel411 offers a variety of products, including smudge wands and kits, incense, aroma therapy kits and Warmies, which come in eye masks, neck wraps and cute stuffed animals, and can be heated up to activate the lavender buds inside. Effusion lamps help clear rooms of germs and allergens.

The shop also has books and journals, henna tattoos, ghost hunter and tea leaf reading kits, crystals, jewelry, pendulums, wind chimes and flying wish paper, where you write a wish on the paper, form it into a tube, light it and your wish goes up into the sky. Tarot cards are sold there as well.

“I’ve got a really good assortment of different styles for different people,” Calkins said.

“I’m doing things I believe in, that I would use myself and have knowledge of,” she added. “I want to make people feel comfortable coming here.”

Angel411 is located at 219 Main St., and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Readings are by appointment. Learn more on the “Angel411, LLC” Facebook page.
