The Central girls golf team lost 238-244 against Turkey Valley on April 29. Reagan Kime from Turkey Valley was the medalist with a 52. Runner up was Central’s Madison Sylvester, who shot a 57.

Other scores from Central were Haley Frieden with a 58, Alexis Fettkether a 63, Makayla Erickson a 66, Sophia Keppler a 67 and Madison Schmidt a 74.

“It was a good experience to play on the road even though we lost, as our players are getting valuable experience. While the winds were blowing at 30 to 35 miles per hour, it was the same for both teams, and that is not an excuse, but a tribute to our players that they did not complain,” said coach Jamie Rodenberg.

The girls followed that up with their best team score—by 19 strokes—at Big Rock Golf Course in Fayette, as West Central did not have enough girls for a team score. Sylvester was the medalist with a 53, and Frieden and Erickson were runners up, shooting 55s. Keppler was right behind them with a 56, and Fettkether also had her best round of the year with a 60. Rounding out the scoring for Central was Schmidt with an 86.

“It is so fun to watch our girls improve, as most had no idea what to expect when they first picked up a club on March 18,” Rodenberg said.

The girls’ final match last week was a 228-235 loss to North Fayette Valley on May 6. The medalist was NFV’s Rayne Everitt with a 52, while a 55 from Central’s Sylvester made her the runner up medalist.

Other scores from Central included Keppler with a 57, Haley Frieden a 60, Erickson a 63 and Fettkether a 65. Schmidt went to the clubhouse with a 72.

“Madison has been a fine leader, though she knows she can shoot a better score, and Sophia Keppler had a nice comeback round after a couple tough starting holes,” said Rodenberg. “Other than that, our girls weren’t very happy with the way they played, but the sun warmed us the next day and we all survived. Every day we may not play as well as we expect, but welcome to the sport of golf and the real world. We will try hard next time. The Central girls finished with a 4-3 dual record, and coach Smith and I could not be prouder of them.”

While the girls struggled to find wins, the boys picked up a 198-221 victory against Turkey Valley at Jackson Heights Golf Course on April 29. Medalist was Central’s Parker Smith with a 43, and the runner up medalist was Garrett Kurtenbach from Turkey Valley, who had a round of 46.

Additionally, Evan Pensel shot a 48 for Central, and Tommy Seeland completed the round with a 49. Brock Eglseder finished with a 58, Luke Asche a 60 and Karl Gardner a 63.

“What a round by Parker Smith on an away course when winds were blowing 30 to 35 miles per hour. This is a great win for our studs, as they continue to work hard and get better,” Rodenberg said.

The boys followed that by shooting a 185 against West Central at Big Rock Golf Course on May 3. West Central only had three players, so did not have a team score.

West Central’s low scorer was Brooke Ingels with a 53. The medalist from Central was Pensel with a 41, and the runner up was Smith with a 44. Seeland had a score of 45, Asche shot a 55 and Eglseder and Gardner each had 59s. Tristan Weigand tallied a 72, while Keaton Klingman finished with a 74, Jordan Helgerson a 75 and Marcus Evans an 80.

“Though West Central didn’t have enough players for a team score, it was great to play another course on a nice day. More importantly, it was great to see our guys play well away, especially medalist Evan Pensel, runner up medalist Parker Smith, Luke Asche and Tommy Seeland. They are all seniors, and will be sorely missed after the season,” Rodenberg said.

It was a different story in the final match of the week against North Fayette Valley, as Central lost 173-195 at Elkader. NFV’s Dane Schott was the medalist from with a 41. Smith shot a 43, and was the runner up medalist, giving him six medals in the last six meets.

Other scores from Central were Seeland at 46, Evan Pensel with a 49 and Asche and Eglseder both with 57s. Gardner ended with a 59, Weigand a 61, Helgerson a 62, Klingman a 67 and Evans a 73.

“The Central boys finished 4-3 in dual meets. It has been a fun group to be around all season. Coach Smith and I enjoy working with all of them,” Rodenberg said.

The boys returned to the links at the conference meet on May 10, at the South Winn Golf and Country Club. They’ll follow that with the sectional meet at Silver Springs Golf Club in Ossian on May 14.

The girls played at the conference meet on May 11, at Tri City Golf Course, Luana.
