Prairie’s Logan Higgins hits a wedge to the fourth green Thursday afternoon.

The 2021 Blackhawk boys golf season started practice on April 19 with three days of practices in windy conditions leading to chill factors in the 30s. They all deserve credit for the work they put in to get ready for upcoming matches, along with some juggling baseball or soccer practices plus school work.

Seven players are registered to compete this year after a totally lost 2020 season due to Covid. The seven are James Reilly, Jackson DeBruin, Quintin Scott, Logan Shedivy, Khai Warrington, Logan Higgins, and Adam Anderson. With the exception of Logan Shedivy, none of these young men had competed in varsity or JV golf prior to this year.

The Blackhawks started their competitive season on Thursday, April 22 by hosting a nine-hole, four-team event at the Prairie du Chien Country Club with Fennimore, Cuba City, and Richland Center joining the Hawks.

James Reilly led the Hawks in scoring by carding a 50. Jackson DeBruin added a 61 score in his first meet followed by a 65 for Logan Higgins, with Adam Anderson adding a 73 and Logan Shedivy a 90. The team totaled 249 in its first meet of the year. Fennimore had 206 and Richland Center scored 242.

Two-man best ball

Jackson DeBruin and James Reilly traveled to the Reedsburg Golf Invitational to compete in an 18-hole, two-man best ball (ie: both players play their own ball with lowest score between the two being team score) on Friday, April 23. Both players were seeing the Reedsburg course for the first time and improved their play from Thursday. James Reillly scored a 77 to take first place in the afternoon flight to earning him medalist honors. Jackson had a chip-in birdie for his first birdie of the year and carded a 114. The Reilly/DeBruin team took home sixth place honors for their overall team score in the best ball twosomes.

The Blackhawks played for the third day in a row with James Reilly, Jackson DeBruin, and Quintin Scott playing in the 18-hole Dodge-Point Invitational on Saturday, April 24 with 80 plus players participating in this event.

James Reilly led the Blackhawks in scoring with a 78 earning him a tie for second place. Quintin Scott and Jackson DeBruin were playing the Dodge-Point course for the first time ever with Q carding 105 and Jackson a 108.

All seven Blackhawk players have improved significantly in the past week of practice and competition as we look forward to the SWC season.
