The Central boys track and field team turned in an 11-point, sixth-place performance at the Waukon Boys Indian Relays last week. James Eberhardt led the team with 4 points, followed by Brayden Finley with 2. Elliot Kelly and Corey Weber each scored 1.5 points, while Dan McGreal finished with 1, and Lane Orr and Carson McClintock had .5 points apiece.

“The meet started well.  We posted some of our best performances of the season in early events, but we struggled in some of our later events,” said head coach Tom Wilwert. “A major reason that we struggle in some of our later events was that we have to do a better job warming back up for later events.”

The Warriors had some top-10 finishes, including in the 100 meter dash, where Weber and Sabastian Florek placed eighth and ninth, respectively.

There was another pair of top-10 finishes in the 200, as Florek put in a season best performance to place ninth with a time of 26.91, and Orr finished 10th.

Finley kept the top-10 streak going with a seventh place finish in the 110 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 19.54.

Then there is the ongoing improvement of Eberhardt in the throwing events, posting a fourth-place finish in the discus with a season best distance of 125 feet, 3 inches, which earned him four points. The distance was only three feet off Eberhardt’s career best set in 2019. He followed that with eighth place in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 9.5 inches.

“This is a good sign that he is getting near the state meet qualifying distance in the discus,” Wilwert said.

In the 4x100 meter relay, Kelly, Finley, McGreal and Weber finished sixth in a time of 51.47. The 4x200 team of Kelly, Orr, McGreal and Weber also finished in sixth place with a time of 1:50.86.

Central showed some improvement in the 4x100 weight person relay, as Hunter Grimm, Sam Fettkether, Ryan Schroeder, and Eberhardt finished fourth with a time of 55.48, which was a season best mark. The team also produced a season-best time in the 800 sprint medley, when Kelly, McGreal, Weber and Finley placed sixth in a time of 1:49.19.

“Elliot Kelly, Dan McGreal and Corey Weber performed well, but the highlight of the race was how Brayden Finley ran the anchor 400. He wasn’t able to catch the next team, but he competed in a way that gave us a chance,” Wilwert said.

While the team struggled, the coach noted the athletes also showed growth in certain areas, such as at the start, driving out of the blocks and improving stride length and power. They will need to continue improving with the upcoming events, which Wilwert described as “the toughest competition we see all season.”

The boys return to the track on April 26, at Maquoketa Valley, then have another meet on April 29, at Clayton Ridge.
