Barbara was born on March 2, 1943, in Michigan City, Ind., the daughter of Theodore (Ted) E. and Naomi H. Marshall.

Barbara received her education from West Phoenix High School where she graduated with the class of 1961. Barbara met her husband Martin C. Walter when he was stationed with the United States Navy in Phoenix, Ariz. They were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church in Guttenberg on April 20, 1963. Martin and Barb were blessed with four children. She worked various positions at Ben Franklin (Evers Company, Inc.), Guttenberg Golf and Country Club, Guttenberg Schools, Schuster and Mick Law Office, and The Carpet Shop.

Barbara was a faith-filled woman and served Trinity Lutheran Church in many roles including secretarial duties for many pastors, youth leader, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She served as president, vice president and treasurer of the Ladies Aid and treasurer of the Iowa East District LWML. Barb volunteered at the Guttenberg Head Start, Guttenberg Hospital Gift Shop as well as provided transportation for the elderly. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, knitting, plastic canvas and other various crafts. Barbara was part of a bowling team for many years and took pleasure in riding her bike around town with Martin. She loved to play games of all kinds with family and friends including board games, euchre, and shanghai. Barbara delighted in the holidays, baking Christmas cookies and hosting family and friends in their home. This tradition is faithfully carried on by her children and their families. After retirement, Barb and Martin joined friends traveling around the United States. One of her favorite trips—taking a cruise on the Mississippi River on the Mississippi Queen—fulfilled a dream of hers.
