MFL MarMac boys and girls golf teams looking forward to good year

MFL MarMac’s boys and girls golf teams will hit the course this week for the first time since 2019.
“I’m looking forward to a good year,” said Joe Milewsky, who’s coached for nearly 10 years and is joined this season by a new assistant, Jake Wilke.
Milewsky noted the golfers have been blessed with more time outside to prepare, unlike previous seasons.
“This year, we’ve had four or five practices around [school] and four or five at the course also,” he said. “They’re pretty well focused on what they need to do.”
Seniors Braden Landt, Gavin Meana and Ben Miene will bring considerable experience to the boys team, said Milewsky. They’ve played on the team before and have practiced a lot the last two years.
“Last year, when COVID hit, you know where they were? At the golf course. Because they couldn’t be anywhere else,” the coach said. “They played a lot of golf last spring and last summer.”
Nick Krambeer, a freshman, also brings some golfing experience to MFL MarMac, as does sophomore Joe Grau. According to Milewsky, those two, along with sophomore Jonah Wille, will round out the Bulldogs’ top six. Other golfers include juniors Collin Henkels and Jaxton Schroeder, sophomore Will Koether and freshman Sawyer Keehner.
Milewsky said the key to success, especially for the Bulldogs’ three seniors, is to play against the course and not against who they’re golfing with.
“Every kid hits it differently. Some kids may drive to beat heck,” he remarked. “Our kids don’t need to try to keep up with that. If they try to keep up with that, we’re going to struggle. If they can play their game, I think we’ll do well.”
MFL MarMac’s girls team is more inexperienced, with junior Miranda Lang the only returner.
“I think Miranda will be pretty good. She was coming on two years ago, at the end,” Milewsky noted.
Senior Rose Grau, junior Haylee Guyer and freshmen Mallory Lang and Chylie Feuerhelm make up the rest of the squad. Although inexperienced, Milewsky said he likes what he’s seen from them in practice.
“They are improving on their hits,” he shared. “It’s going to be harder to figure out what we’re capable of until we actually get out and golf. Obviously, the more you golf, the better you’re going to get. As long as we improve every meet, we’re going to be good.”
Both the MFL MarMac boys and girls teams kicked off the season Tuesday, in a triangular with Waukon and Decorah. They’ll take on Central at Tri City Golf Course, in Luana, on Thursday, April 15.
