Death Notice: Mildred Dickinson
Mildred Dickinson, 98, passed away at Dow Rummel Village with her daughter at her side, on Friday, March 12, 2021, her son’s birthday.
Born Nov. 16, 1922, in the Coulee Region, Millie’s parents were William and Edythe (Hein) Nelson. She attended school in La Crosse. Following high school, during World War II, she was employed as a line inspector at the bullet casing factory, part of the heroic war effort. She married Wayne Dickinson in 1944 in La Crosse, their residence for a year until Wayne was transferred to Prairie du Chien, where they lived 18 years, and later moved to Sparta. Millie was a devoted homemaker, involved in PTA school activities, church activities, garden club, and PEO. At the age of 75, she left Wisconsin winters behind, moving to Capitola, Calif., on Monterey Bay, where she became immediately involved in the mobile home park social events, and landscape garden committee, PEO, hiking club, and senior exercise days. Although at 93, arthritis and dementia began to steal Millie’s body and mind, she retained a positive outlook on life, moving herself and her little dog to Sioux Falls, S.D., embracing her new situation and Dow Rummel Village family.
She is survived by her three children, Nancy Dickinson (Patrick Traut), David Dickinson and Ray Dickinson (Kathleen O’Boyle).
With much gratitude, the children thank the Dow Rummel staff for their loving care of Millie, particularly during this challenging pandemic year. Memorials may be directed to the Dow Rummel Development Foundation, 1321 West Dow Rummel St., Sioux Falls, SD 57104. A memorial service was held and live streamed at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, S.D. on Thursday, March 18.
