Barbara Jeanne Mohning, 88, of Garnavillo, went to join her heavenly Father on March 10, 2021, at the Elkader Care Center.

Barbara was born on Jan. 31, 1933, in Elkader, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Dueringer) Burlingame, the youngest of seven children.

Barbara received her education and graduated from the St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Elkader. She also attended Marycrest College in Davenport for two years following her graduation, before marrying Loren Frederick Mohning on July 16, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader. It wasn’t long before the couple had their first child. Within 10 years and 3 days, the couple enjoyed more jubilation as seven additional children came to join the Mohning family.

Barbara was compassionately religious in her faith. She was a long time member of the Catholic Daughters. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Barbara loved to cook and bake. Every Sunday she prepared Sunday dinner for her family and always made homemade buns and pie for dessert. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, gardening, watching the Cubs, and going out to eat (especially at the Clayton Lighthouse). Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. They always brought a smile to her face.

Barbara was received by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ leaving behind her eight children, three daughters, Vicki (Steve) McLane, Terri, and Kristi (Stuart) Clefisch; five sons, Tom, Mike, Lyndon, Kurt and Quint; four grandchildren, Matthew McLane, Luke (Mandi) Clefisch, Nathan (Samantha Roussel) Clefisch and Amy (Craig) Kluesner. She also leaves behind three sweet great-grandchildren, Sylvia, Hazel and Elsie Clefisch, and many outstanding cousins, nephews and nieces.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband; daughter-in-law, Lori Mohning; six siblings and spouses, Edward (Blanche and Dolores), Bernard, Gladys (Glen) Mentzel, Dorthy (Reynold) Hedeman, Ruth (Jim) Sorensen, Marjorie (Lorin) Hamann and sister and brother-in-law, Oscar and Laverne Troester.

In lieu of flowers and all styles of sympathy, memorials may be sent to either St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or Saint Mary’s Catholic School.
