The MFL MarMac School Board approved the district’s 2021-2022 calendar and budget at its regular meeting on March 8.

The next school year will start on Monday, Aug. 23, 2021 and end on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. The board also considered a May 23 end date, but opted for the later version of the calendar to allow for two built-in snow days.

MFL MarMac Superintendent Dale Crozier said he’s still unsure if the state will allow districts to have virtual learning days on snow days next year.

“No matter what we approve, we can always amend it,” he told the board.

The upcoming budget has a tax levy of $14.54 per $1,000 valuation.

“What we approved is two cents less than what we published,” Crozier noted. “When I published it, I didn’t know the actual income tax received in 2019. I found that out March 1, so I adjusted the budget.”

Crozier said the tax levy dropped nearly 40 cents from the current fiscal year.

“Most people would see that as a good thing. I think it’s good as long as we don’t drop to the point that we can’t get that back if we need it,” he said. “But I don’t see that as a problem because there’s really nothing we can do about it. We’re in a position where we don’t need to levy for no reason.”

28E agreements approved

Along with the calendar and budget, the board also accepted 28E agreements for 2021-2022. This includes  NICC Alternative School, NICC Concurrent Classes and Partnerships, NICC Career and Technical Education (CTE) Agreements, Student Teaching with Regent Schools, Luther and Upper Iowa, Public Transit-Northeast Iowa Community Action, Little Bulldog and Dr. Smith Learning Centers, Iowa Department of Human Services and Juvenile Court Services, Monona and McGregor-Marquette Chambers of Commerce, MercyOne Hospital, the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre and Turner Park.

Staffing changes approved

A number of staff and coaching changes were considered at the meeting. The board accepted the resignations of Michelle Hontz for elementary music, middle school play advisor and high school assistant cross country coach; Shauna Lange for fifth grade; Stephanie Jones for middle school student council; Karla Hanson for middle school play assistant; Tabitha Bohland for food service; Kayla Keehner for seventh grade girls basketball and volleyball; and Natalie Campbell for eighth grade volleyball.

Additionally, Erin O’Brien was hired as a high school English teacher, Jess Brehmer and Lukas Arenz as assistant track coaches, Hannah Schutte as assistant softball coach and Chessie Andrist as eighth grade volleyball coach. Transfers were approved for Erik Peterson to high school math and Amy Bunting to fifth grade.
